This thread is specifically for people who know the value of vintage bikes. If you dont know what these bikes are please do not comment on prices as i'm looking for helpful advice.

I have 2 x Giant road bikes from a friend that used to cycle with her parents many moons ago.

1st is a Giant Cadex CFR2 with all original parts still.

Condition is good. Carbon tubes lugged to aluminium frame joints. 1056 components throughout

2nd is a Giant Cadex HFR2 with all original parts. Condition is very good. Also carbon lugged with aluminium joints. This model was imported but i think it's exactly the CFR2 but from Taiwan. also 1056 cmponents throughout.

They would like to know the value of these bikes.Any ideas as to value as a vintage bike or value as a collectors bike or even value as a second owner bike.

Thanks all,

Both look like they are in absolute mint condition and that alone should add value. Sorry I can't help with a valuation, the experts / collectors will be onto this soon enough. You can also post it in the Retro Bike thread. Alternatively you can PM Morpheus, Heart Coppi, Heyyou and LooseCog. Between them you'll get a good answer.

Those were/are great bikes. My brother still has his one (same as red one). From a value point of view not as much as classic/vintage Italian steel. A nice bit of history as this is where Giant started dabbling in carbon, and we all know how that story goes... Largest bike manufacturer in the world. Price wise I would probably say around R4000. But let's see what the others say.

Personally I would say they would be better to keep than sell, they really good quality bikes that have such a nice ride.

Hi Gongmech

Lovely bikes and in great condition. I had a late 80s Trek (can't remember the model), with carbon tubes and ali lugs. She was a very, very nice ride.

I don't really know what value to attach to these two, it's sort of out of the ordinary and a little too recent. Most of us collect steel bikes, or perhaps ali, depending on the age etc.

I've just had a quick glance at eBay and looks like they go for between £130 and £300, depending on components.

So, overseas you might get up to R5k, but with Shimano 105, you're more likely to look at between R2000 and R3500.

My guess would be about the same here.

The 105 STI 8 speed groupo sells for about £100 tops.

I hope this helps. Have a look on eBay and some of the other bike auction sites.

Both bikes are in great condition and judging by the photos they are smaller 51-53cm frames. The red bike has some nice rims. As stated above this was the start of the carbon fibre age and these bikes were soundly built and will survive many years of use to come.

The Shimano 105 group sets were very popular and were put on almost every make of bike made during the period. The 105's were super strong and reliable and lead many innovations such as the biopace chainrings. Unfortunately therefore there is a lot of 105 parts available mostly in poor condition with prices lower than other brands.

I have a Colnago C40 (almost 20years old) which is still ridden regularly by my wife as her primary road bike.

My feeling on price is between R3k - R4k. The sale may also take a bit longer but there are collectors out there who may be keen so if you don't need the money take your time and wait for the right buyer to step up.

Not all collectors buy Italian steel bikes, although that is what drives our passion, there are collectors of Cannondales, etc.

The bikes are in good condition and I wouldn't advocate stripping them down and selling them part, by part.

Good luck with sale.
