Alternative tubeless rim strip

Headshot

Recommended Posts

I have been experimenting with different rim strip on a set of No Tubes Olympics in 26"size which I will use as my lightweight XC wheels.

I found silicon self fusing tape at BW for under R60 and gave it a go. It stretches to thinner than its actual width of 25mm or so and is easy to fit on narrow rims (19mm) and fuses to itself very tightly.

Initially I had my doubts because of air loss but discovered that the tyre sidewall was at fault (rubbish Bontrager tubeless ready tyre.

The thickness of the tape could cause problems in certain cases and it remains to be seen if its durable enough...

More tests to follow.

I love that stuff. adheres to itself when stretched (heat activated, through stretching) and it GRIPS. Just gotta be sure that the surface you want it to adhere to is sparkly clean...

Ya, smells nice too and comes in great colours, and best of all, no horrid adhesive residue.

For 26 inch cut a 24 inch tube down the center, (butterfly it so to speak), use that as your tape and valve. Once the tire is inflated cut the excess tube off with a Stanley knife. For 29er use a 26 inch tube. Easy cheap and no k@k with valves.

Tube and valve cost R50 per wheel.

Works like a charm initially - but deteriarates with the use of sealant. I have tried various methods and products, number one is proper rim tape - number two is a bmx inner tube cutto a rim strip.

You dont get 24 inch tubes with presta valves.

buy a presta valved tube, cut out the valve. Use electrical tape to line the rim, make a small hole in teh tape for the valve. Insert valve in hole, with contact adhesive around base of valve to make a good seal between the valve and electrical tape. attach retention nut to valve stem, screw on tight.

Aaah no - I'll monitor mine and see how it goes. I am using Cafe Latex so no ammonia may help...
