Being new to this as in 10 odd months.

 

Last night with the race the following happened not sure if my gears are playing up or something else.

 

My bike won't free wheel. In other words if I am moving I have to peddle. I also find if I peddle backwards the back wheel goes backwards.

 

Any ideas. I don't want to join the circus with a backwards going bike.

 

I did pick up some mud during the race if that helps.

 

I cleaned the bike this morning but that has not helped.

Like Garreth says .There is unwanted stuff in your free body hub .Mud ,Rust ext .If it is a cheap hub this can happen easily .Your axle can also be stuck with the same rubbish .If you were riding in the mud the last few weeks you have a hub service ,replacement coming

Sorry for dropping in on you like this Muggins; but i've got a question for the experts...

 

My chain keeps falling off!!!!! i went to my local bike shop they said to me that the chain length is correct and my Front Derailluers guide is adjust as close as possible to the big ring while the chain being on. Now...

 

i have a Sram X7 rear mech (not type 2), and most times during my descent while pedaling and not changing, my chain falls off(the big ring that is). what could be the cause? it is getting very frustrating now and i am seriously contemplating getting a chain guide (But then my dropper post budget will be stuffed! :( )

So if there is a way to solve this problem without buying anything then please advise!

Some weeks ago I had that spoke protector plastic ring thinghy between hub and sprockets dislodge and jammed between the hub/spokes and sprockets - could not freewheel (thought my freewheel body had gone.

Freewheel hub body either dirty or it packed up in which case will mean a replacement

Like Ysterperd said. Just on a side note, not implying that you did it, but never use any high pressure water to clean a bike. Plays havoc with seals bearings etc.

Yes Garrethk,

 

thats what i meant when i said "Front Derailluers guide is adjust as close as possible to the big ring while the chain is on". I think there is possibly only 2mm space between guide and chain on ring.

Don't simply accept what LBS say about your chain length being correct. Check it yourself, there are lots of chain length calculators on the net. My bike was initially assembled by a LBS and I found the chain 4 links too long. they never checked or shortened it, simply removed it from the packet and installed it. I did the chain calc thingy, shortened it and no more dropped chains.

 

also check your B screw is set properly - you can google that as well if you want to know how to set it properly

My rear hub has disintegrated completely.

 

Funny you mention this.

 

In about October last year we did a ride at Hakahana when there had been a lot of rain during the week. 10 km's into the ride I had to turn around because that clay like mud was all over my bike, chain, gears wheels the works.

 

You will think I am joking now but my 12.5 kg bike weighed 35 kg's when we got back and weighed it. That's how much mud it had on it.

 

That is the only time I have used a pressure cleaner on it.

 

After that the mud riding was out. Problem was that after that I did the Cornwall Hill trailseeker and tore the ligaments in my right shoulder during the race. I did not ride for 5 months after that.

 

Went out for the first time 2 weeks back for an easy ride at Red barn and the bike was fine.

 

Then 6 odd km's into this night ride a week after that it went.

 

I know the guys at Cycle Tech said to me this morning that riding in mud = expensive repairs and he recommends staying out of the stuff.

 

When I wash my bike I normally just hose down with those Gardena attachments that spray the water similar to a watering can.

 

I spray clean green first, wash off with water, wash with soapy water and then rinse off. Dry and apply chain lube last.

Got my bike back this morning. New rear hub. Went for a ride and back in business.

 

Big thumbs up for Cycle Tech Kyalami, great service. These guys get your bike in and out super quick.

 

My bike was so clean when I walked in there I walked straight past it, thinking it was a new bike.

If the rear hub gets cacked up in mud again, remove cassette and free wheel body and give them a good clean before riding again. Mere rinsing it off is not good enough, the grime/mud tends to get past and into the mechanism
