Mojoman Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 How many people would pay to ride a guided trail in Magaliesburg? That means arriving at a venue, going out for a 2-4 hr ride (depending on rider skill and fitness) and exploring areas that would ordinarily be off limits or unknown to casual day visitor riders. We are also exploring the idea of having weekend cycling packages at venues, that would be accommodation as well as being able to go on a guided ride. nonky and andregrobler 2
Mojoman Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 The idea is the try and get our Magaliesburg trails going one way or another (!) and hopefully in the future to be able to take a couple of locals and get them involved and interested not only in cycling but also caring for the environment and taking pride in doing something worthwhile to promote the area. Magalies is based on tourism and the more people we can encourge to visit the area then the greater the odds are of making a few more jobs for locals. ValeYellow 1
ValeYellow Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 I think you are onto something, venues near and far (possibly) where you can pay X price and it includes accommodation, meals, and the ride/s? I would be interested.... Mojoman 1

I would be interested....One of our challenges in getting the trails going is convincing the landowners that we can ride through properties without damaging the area or causing veld fires (one of the issues that was brought up as someone saw a cyclist smoking once!) and littering etc. Then of course there is the endless issue of riders just going where they want which seems to be a common denominator with all landowners!
RocknRolla Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 (edited) I would be interested. Have ridden the area before, but sometimes I am worried about an angry farmer pumping my lycra ass full of buckshot. Knowing all negotiotiations and permissions are taken care of is great. I would keep pricing in line with bike park entry in other words between 30 and 50 ZAR.Offering discount on bigger grouped riders would be a benefit - although inherently bigger groups are not always better, specially with varying fitness levels. Safe parking for vehicles with ablution facilities at the start is also suggested. Edited May 13, 2014 by RocknRolla Mojoman and ValeYellow 2
Mojoman Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 Would anyone else want to make a comment or complete the poll? The MDI (Magaliesburg Development Initiative) is having a meeting this afternoon about the upgrading of our train station so I can have a chat to a couple of the guys involved and locals etc to see if we have a future with this. After some emailing this morning it looks as though most venue owners and tourism bodies in the area are keen to support this, if its managed correctly it can only benefit Magalies in the long term! Grant Frewen Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Howsit there are many people who would pay for a guided tour ...but there are many people like myself who want to ride in peace , solitude or with my tight knit group of bros without a guide to move along or tell when its time for a sandwich break at a pretty place. . Im very familiar with the magalies area and the cardinal issue is lack of passes which can link routes . besides Breedts nek there are two options .One to the highest point in the northwest is a tar road used to access the Sentech towers , from there there does exist in the drier times of year a path that is rough but negotiable to a farm and 2nd roads .The vulture feeding site here is something to behold but also to protect. The other option is a perfect sand road going over the ridge 5 km south of the option 1 passing close to the Castle gorge area. So we can all use Google earth etc and its not the most technically challenging area in terms of getting lost .In short people want to do their own thing and they will be happy to pay for it ala Northern farms . Getting somebody to ride with you and show you the way doesnt gel with me but other options do .remember this area is actually quite far to drive to from the major population areas so any riders who do come out here are usually serious ,not novice pedlars and wlll happily do 50-60km +. Brake! Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 I would happily pay for such a ride. So far I'm a roadie, but whenever I go camping (Mountain Sanctuary Park etc) I always think that it would be nice to pass the time with a bit of mountain biking but don't really know where to start. Something organised would make me do it, and cut down on my personal admin - mapping the way etc. From above comments, it may be riders like me rather than the more experienced okes that are your target, but I'm sure there are a few of us about. But Its not just about the cycling but also promoting Magaliesburg as a tourism destination, prehaps this weekend you go on a MTB trail but because you enjoyed the area and your time here you might end up booking accommodation at a local venue in the future. We want to try and make use of local businesses for lunches, breakfast, cold drinks etc and you make a day of exploring the area as opposed to just clocking up the KM's as fast as you can and then heading home.
