Building the ultimate value for money MTB

Hey guys!

I am aiming to build the best value-for-money XC/trail mountain bike. I don't necessarily want the best components, but rather the components that are decent enough to work perfectly and last and are relatively inexpensive.

I am looking at something between 120mm to 140mm of fork travel because I ride long distances (races of up to 80kms a day) but also love smashing it down some single track.

Some frames I had in mind are the PYGA OneTwenty 650B, Lapierre Spicy 327, to give an indication of price range. Other frame recommendations are welcome, please!

No carbon, just alloy.

Any other advice welcome, too!

Budget is around R40 000, trying to be less than that though.

Let me know your ideas and suggestions!

Dude, for R40k, you could build yourself a real monster. I'm thinking:

Pyga OneTwenty 650b - R20k

RockShox Revelation - R8k

XT/SLX groupset - R9/R7k

Stans Arch Ex - R5k?

Finishing kit. - Scope the hub for deals on stem, handlebars and the like, rather than buying new.

Should be around that price, but I haven't really researched everything to be honest.

Point is, by mixing and matching, the above, your aiming at something that is a dream bike, definitely not a bargain basement effort.

Have fun!

It will be my dream bike, but if it can be cheaper, all the better! With the XT/SLX groupset, any problems with shifting? I have run a SRAM X9 rear derailleur with X7 shifters and it is constantly giving me issues, always need to reset, even after a cable replacement. Need something reliable!

Definitely like the Stans' Arch Ex wheelset, need something strong, will compromise on weight because I'm young and strong so a few grams here or there will hurt a lot less than a bent wheel.

Dream for me at this stage, plus, my thoughts are that until i can do a Carbon frame and the attached price justice, I won't even consider it. I'm young, if i want to save weight, I'll get in the gym and lose weight!

My 2 cents on rims. Check out the Spank Oozy. I'm loving mine. Prefer them over the Flows I had before. Plus something a bit different to the average Joe and so many colours to choose from

How can a dream bike be alloy.

Mine is steel

I have SLX shifters and XT rear derailleur on my Trek Superfly Elite and I never miss a gear or have any kind of trouble, and I've used KMC and XTR chains.

I just saw the cheaper version (Nerve AL 8.0) which is 1999 pounds which is approx. R35 000. thanks!

It is Euro not pound which works out to R36500 at the current R14.0428 exchange rate.
