SS riding is in fact not very good for you it places too much stress on joints, ligaments and muscles so for me this would never be the "next step" and I have been riding mtb since 1990.

Just a question, would you then suggest 1x10/1x11.

Regards.

Great Ride

did the 45 KM route, brilliant, however I have never experience chain suck Like this ride, if I did not have spare lube with me I would have had to walk the hills, did anyone else have higher than normal chain suck issues.

Guys, let it be.

I did not enjoy the race, for whatever reasons. Nothing anybody can do to change that.

Next year I will just not enter the event, and do something else on the day.

Problem solved.

We can do the eemsaamheid road. 100km Gravel travel.(tip trans and k2c prep) :w00t:

Aah.. Thanks...

After a rather wet/muddy patch it sounded like I was grinding coffee when pedaling.. I grabbed my water bottle and gave my cassette a quick splash of water which seems to fix the issue.. .I assume it was just sand that got caught up in everything, it isn't harmful to do that is it? Done it a few time now when riding in the wet.

I have never experienced it that bad, as soon as I dropped into granny, I heard that noise and wham The chain was around the rear stay, I road most of it in my big ring, then I stopped and poured a bottle of Squirt on the chain and it seem to solve it

i ride 1x10 & never experienced chain suck although I was riding through the puddles & river crossings there was the earlier 1 or 2 where I jumped off & ran through the water probably saved me to the end.

In hindsight I think there is a lot of wisdom in this approach, save the equipment.

Wow guys, a lot of talk centered around drivetrains, does this not belong in a different forum..? The chain suck experienced by quite a few riders, well not much one can do about the terrain in the area, or the weather experienced on the day.

Will appreciate more feedback on the actual event, route, venue etc.

Did not ride it this weekend, but feel your pain with the walkers.

Sorry you lost so much time, and picked up a piece of wire, at least you did not have to wait 10 minutes plus (in the same place) like some people have to in Die Burger mtb. When I marked the route, I experienced one of those awesome sunny winter days which "allowed' the views...Nothing I could do about the weather on the day though...

thats the same spot I got lost too.

What do you mean after Bastille day? Bastille Day is officially tomorrow only, the 14th.

I know which place you are talking about, there was actually a piece of bunting across that sections, as well as a chalk arrow to the right (prior to the race that is); someone (or some thing) must have passed through there and flagrantly "erased" said markings. Thank goodness this "detour" did not end up being way longer...

I found it strange that this single track piece was totally unrideable, we had to hike up there & immediately I knew we were on the wrong path, but human nature as it is i followed the riders ahead of me.There was chalk markings on the ground, but together with rain & cyclist from the shorter routes riding over there that's what erased it, not completely though, it was there you just couldn't make out which direction it was pointing to, maybe plastic arrow boards for next year & I'll be back for sure, oh &showers, if we come spend the day in the Franschhoek town for Bastille Day we would need to be able to clean ourselves up afterwards.

Venue was perfect nice & central, enough parking, enough toilets, just never had showers as mentioned above.

The route I'll give a 8/10, it had everything just too little rideable Single Track.

Better route marking, more visible (maybe color coded too) at the first split for 35km/45km, Both marshall & traffic cop directed us onto the shorter route some of us ignored them cause we followed the arrow & others not so lucky. As mentioned already chalk on the ground (secondary route marker) plus plastic boards with arrows (primary route marker), this should be considered as an investment as you will use it for future races as well & I foresee the Bastille MTB Challenge being around for another good couple of years.

Timing was out immediately i already gave Grev the thumbs up.

I rode with my wife and we were quite far back on the 32km route and we had no issues getting lost, Not sure if you guys are referring to the long route but it was said the short route went through there as well.

All the arrows was still visible when we passed through!

I will be back next year! Hopefully i can do the long route again!
