Through Axle Hub to use on QR frame - help please

Hi

 

I am building up a training bike from some spares that I have.

 

The frame I am going to use has Quick Release at the back. The wheels I intend using are Bontrager with 142x12 through axle hubs. (I think Bontrager use a DT Swiss hub). So what is the best solution to make it work? Do you get an adapter to put in the hub to make it QR? And if so where do I find such a thing?

Hope has end plugs that can swop between QR and thru...don't know if bontrager has the same.

Need to check the clearance on that frame with the QR as it will more than likely be designed around a 135mm spaced hub..... you might be requiring a new training rear wheel I think

If the bike is a 29'er, then this might be a cheap opiton

Thanks Hairy. It is a 29er. My first choice would have been to keep the Bontrager wheel as it could serve as back wheel for my other bike in case I need to fit it for whatever reason... But that wheel in the add is cheap enough to consider - just wish it was in Gauteng!

Had the same problem but with my front wheel. I bought these wheel adapters, they work perfectly. im not to sure if they are made for rear wheels aswell, but its worth a try, and not too expensive to buy.+- R300..

Where did you buy these?

You will need to replace the axle end caps with a QR version. As for the 142/135 width the new end caps will reduce the width.

I have DT swiss end caps for QR 135, pull the caps and freebody, and run 142 TA 12mm

 

Its around R1800, for both....

They will fit, BUT it sounds like he needs a 135mm QR. in which case it won't work

Thanks Naas. Looks like the solution. I just need to be sure that it will work on the hub I have. Damn, too bad you are 1500km away for me to try it before I order it!

Hi KiNgL

I was advised today that the particular hub that I have can NOT take different end plugs.

The wheelset is Bontrager Race Lite. 28H hub. Damn I had the bearings replaced and the wheels run 100% true so wanted to use them on my build project. Seems like I need a different hub at the back so might just consider selling the wheels and getting something that can swop plugs... Make me an offer if you are keen.
