Iv noticed that one of my stanchions on my 2012 rockshox sid has started to scratch.

What should i do?

-Get new stanchions?(how much?)

-Just keep riding it and hope for the best?

-Buy a new fork?

If I sold the fork, as is. What could I get for it?

Thanks guys.

Tough descion you have there.

I had the same problem with my reba about 3 months ago, picked up some scratches so sent it in for a service and new seals etc, when it came back it wasn't holding air anymore.apparantly the old seals had deformed to hold the air.

I couldve used it for another year before it failed on the old seals.

New stanchions were quoted. At R3600.

My suggestion would be ride it till you can't anymore or just buy a new fork.

Get to your LBS/fork service guy ASAP.

Depending on the severity you may be able to prolong the inevitable with regular servicing (doing it yourself)

New stanchions "should" be cheaper than a new fork.

Post a pic and maybe droo or one of the other Suspension experts can give you an idea of what you're in for

Photos would help, but ultimately with Rockshox you're in for a new fork. They don't supply bushings seperately, so you'll have to buy a CSU (crown and stanchion assembly) and new lowers. Onve you've factored in the labour and seals for the service and replacement, you may as well just buy a new one.

I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but it's the truth.

In the meantime, learn how to change the oil in the lowers and do it every 30 hours or so of riding time. It's not going to fix the problem, but as Flowta says it'll put off the inevitable. Learning to do this will also help your new fork last forever since you'll be able to do the intermediate maintenance yourself.

If you're not mechanically minded, or have nowhere to work, follow the service schedule. If a 2012 RS is showing stanchion wear I'm guessing it's been ridden for 2 years without a service - those things are pretty tough.

Thanks for you help! i will do so. The shox was serviced previously but obviously not enough. I was also under the impression that they where very tough, guess my service intervals where a little bit to far spaced! I wont make this mistake again!

OK so let me understand this.

If your stanchions are scratched, your shock will loose air and oil.

Now only one of my stanchions are scratched, the side that has the lockout system on. So because the side that you pump with air is fine, (no scratches) the shock will only loose oil on the damaged side and not any air because the side that contains air is fine?

Is this correct?

I hope i haven't lost you guys!

Pics, how big are the scratches?

To prolong the life, you can fill in the scratches with clear nail polish which will help to reduce the wear on the seals and stop oil leaking out in the scratches

As others have said, in the long run you may as well just use the fork until it fails and you can save up for a new one. Then learn on the old fork to do the services so that you can look after the new one better.

Not quite. Oil yes.The air spring is contained inside the left stanchion tube and has nothing to do with the wipers, which are the grey rubber seals in the lowers visible in the picture.

Shaper, nail varnish works for impact-related nicks and scratches. Trying to fill stanchion wear (which is what's happening there) is putting lipstick on a pig. Those stanchions are poked and need replacing, unfortunately along with the rest of the fork.

Well thanks everyone for the advice. Was very useful. I'm going to start looking for a new fork! Seems like the best option.
