lechatnoir Posted June 14, 2014 Share Hi all, I am thinking of upgrading the brakes on my trusty 26" Trance owing to leaky seals and whatnot Currently I have Hayes Juicy Nines. Can I upgrade levers to new spec ones or will I need to upgrade the rotors too? They seem fine and are mounted on DT Swiss hubs. Are there any other things I need to consider? Thanks in advanceT
porqui Posted June 14, 2014 Share Are they Hayes 9's or Avid Juicy 9's Have you tried to service them and have they given you hassles in the past.
lechatnoir Posted June 15, 2014 Share Seems I mis-poked the keyboard. They're Hayes Nines. I think I'm going to replace them. Will fone around on Monday
Wil6 Posted June 15, 2014 Share If you have cash to spend, try Shimano XT, or SLX thats a bit cheaper but still a great brake. What are you going to do with the Hayes?
Flippa Posted June 16, 2014 Share SLX. Fit, forget, go ride. They just work. vdLRSA and MaXiMuM

MaXiMuM Posted June 16, 2014 Share As I read in another thread, Shimano internal cascade their technology so, the new stuff is what the top of the line was a few years back. SLX today is 3 years ago XT, kinda like that... So you getting good stuff. HaydenE
CJVDM Posted June 16, 2014 Share +1000000000I had Hayes before, good brake but finniky when fitting. Tested juicy 5's as well and didnt like them either, have them back after 1 day of riding and then bought SLX's - what wonderful brakes!! Got XT on my new bike and didnt have a single issue in 2years. Cant go wrong with shimanos dude. HaydenE

That may have been the case in the past but with the current Shimano brakes, from the way I've experienced them and from reading on the web, virtually the same tech is in all the brakes from Slx up, just a few more adjustable bits and less weight as you go further up. Has anyone ridden the current Deores vs anything further up like SLX/Xtr etc, they look quite the same but apparently there is quite a hit on brake power and lever feel on the Deores vs SLX and up. SLX's are amazing value. Edited June 16, 2014 by Skylark
