David's hillclimb stage history:

Won it 2002' date=' 2005, 2006, 2007. Set the record of 12min00sec in 2002.

sure I know he's got a great track record at the Giro del Capo - and ja the money should be on him tomorrow, if he knows GC is out the window.

I would just have liked to see him turn some the of the high placings in europe and asia into actual wins which get the headlines.......all those solid performances in Malaysia got him one overall GC......he talented enough to have got some wins uptop Genting etc.

Strange that Mannie is allowed to race when Kevin and Melt got prevented from starting because they are MTN riders?!

helps when you have your UCI licence from Namibia and not from South Africa' date=' the land of the hair splitters.

I think cos he's racing for his national team and not another sponsored 'pro' team.

thanks for that Sean

similar story: Fullard vs Corti and his resources

nice to see a thread populated by views worth reading, welcome: Rock, Chunky, SB et al

maybe DG will have better success in the Epic where he and Evans can compete on a more level playing field, that is a mouth watering prospect, reports suggest that they have been working well together, DG on Evans' engine and Evans on DG's technical ability - can't wait, hopefully some good live feeds to look forward to

Wondered why I saw Kevin Evans riding thru Lakeside this morning. Didn't realise he was prevented from riding Giro. Wonder how this affects his & DG's Epic prep.

Wonder whether the guy who was shouting the odds about DG spitting at Hunter yesterday will have the balls to apologise..

(assuming that Chunky's version is correctsmiley2.gif, but gotta admit it seems to be more plausible given that Hunter was the party fined..)

tubed, Corti vs Fullard. When you put it like that, it becomes evident how big the gap is between Barloworld and MTN Energade in the big picture.

As nice a guy as Jacques is, he's well down the learning curve compared to Corti...

Epic is a big goal for MTN Energade's two teams. Time for a SA team to get on that final podium!

As an aside to Fullard vs Corti and the impact this has had on the race

Last year DG had a far weaker, last minute, part-time pro team at his disposal - CSC Marcello, but he had Chris Snr on the team/ in the car?, again with no disrespect to JF, I would probaly take Chris Snr (and Mannie!) on my team

I suspect too that with Chris Snr we would not have had riders entertaining the thought of spitting for fear of a warm klap from the big man

Just speculating...

My money is certainly not on DG for the hillclimb. <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

He is a good rider allright, but there is loads of ?good riders? like him.

RH is the only guy that has prodused a massive result (TDF stage win and Tour of Spain stage win) amongst all the top riders in the world. Commonwealth Games medals get some credit but the Euro?s are not there? and malaysia is at the beginning of the season when all the Europeans are still coming out of winter training.

Just have to tell you this little story from last year's Giro.  I was sitting next to CSC/CWC feedzone on the Helderberg stage and one of the young riders on that team bailed very early in the race (granted BW was toying with most of the riders anyway), however now he was waiting their for Chris Snr to come and pick him up with the team vehicle, I have never seen anything like that needless to say Chris was NOT happy that this oke just got off his bike and quit the race for no reason....the guy was still trying to explain he is not feeling well and he has no power etc, Chris wanted to hear none of it, no eye contact, no speaking to him nothing, ....and he left the rider there to help in the feedzone for the rest of the stage....

It wasn't a case of ja shame you poor young little thing, the oom understands you not feeling lekker so shame get in the car hope you feel better, oh no....that youngster new he was in BIG trouble, but understandable there is a lot of money and effort going into a Giro team and you don't just quit for no reason....

So I saw that day how kwaai Chris Snr can get a manager..... but this is not a sport for sissies now is it?

Poison, story sums it up, from a different era is Chris Snr

In Robbie's defence he sure knows what it is sacrifice himself for a team - recall Floyd Landis being paced up the climbs by RH , it is likely that he would have had some more placings over the years, but on many occasions he has just cannon fodder for his team leaders

Sean, thats exactly what I mean - those 2 worlds results are amazing - that race in brutal, but those results don't get the mainstream PR like a 'win'

Yep, the 2007 especially so since DG wasn't on a European-based team and did all the preparation on his own in the rainy Cape Town winter... Check the finish time - 6h44m - long time to ride at just under 40kph...

Sure hats off to DG for hanging in but lets face it, he was only hanging in, somehow I don?t think he was able to put in an attack anywhere during the race even if his depended on it. At world champs the guys race for top positions 1-3 and maybe to score a couple of UCI points after those positions, who cares about 39th place? really! Get with the program
