Doing the race..

Looking at hours done rather than KM

Average is about 10 hours a week for the last 10 weeks

Would have rather gone for the Adventure though

Overtrained !

What makes day 2 so tough. Serious question? What must I avoid to prevent blowing

The climb out of the Umko valley especially after the adrenalin rush of the single track decent into the valley. Pace yourself and hydrate properly, it can get very hot.

Will pop my Sani cherry this year. I found out at Gravel and Grape that I have lost all my Roadie fitness. I was thinking of riding without a Camelbak but it looks like the climb out on day two can take a long time. I need about 700ml per hour on multi stage events. Suggestions?

Just take in the experience. Ride well within yourself and take in the sights and sounds. It's an awesome race. Don't spend 3 days starting at your stem in pursuit of a good time. It's all about the experience.

Couldn't agree more. My first (sound like a confession box) I stopped for photos, took in the views and soaked up the atmosphere. My second was all about time and this year i really want to clap it.

If u haven't, I do recommend you do the race version at some point. Trail etc is cool, but the race has more fan fare, choppers, video interviews, red bull en route and generally more hype, that being said, the route is the same for all and riding with groups that fit ur fitness is far more enjoyable than starting in batch K in the race. :)

Day 2 is about 1600m of climbing, of which almost 80% is done between kms 42 and 70. Once you hit Sappi high flats it flattens out.

It won't kill you but that middle bit is tough. Pace yourself. It's not all over once you hit the nando's waterpoint.

Oh and I forgot to mention that I just sold my bike. Whoops. I got a new bike 2 weeks before Transbaviaans last yr, so not scared. Hope I can take delivery tomorrow (Scott Spark 930 2015) so I can ride the beauty this weekend.

Our training is essentially over. Did our last long one on Monday (80km with 1600m). This weekend we'll do two 30km rides. Easy rides with a few short and sharp intervals in the middle. No singletrack, and not getting out of bed if it's looking like rain.

The most important thing about final Sani prep (for me at least) - don't get sick!

Agree 100% on the sickness part - avoid the rain and lergies!!!!!

Two more rides this w-end (80km & 60km), then just a few spinning classes until the ride.

On Day 2 profile it has a 700m climb over 35kms, so.......as Clarkson says...... 'how hard can it be'...................famous last words!!!!

Plan is to go hell for leather down the hill to give my self enough time to walk up the whole climb out of the valley if need be!
