My experience went from very bad to absolute relief at the end.

I was ever so lucky to pick up an entry from one of my mates who cycles with us and said he was unfit and did not want to hold up his partner.

Two weeks before I hit a nasty cold and had a relapse the day before the start of the Race with terrible fever the night before.

Day 1: I suffered trying to keep up with my partner who I am normally nearly as fit as. My BPM @ 183 was not dropping and I had to call it quits at 43 km after going dizzy and week. ( having my own private summer due to high internal and external temps.)

Though my only chance was now over but I managed to get a lift to race village and spent a night of more fever in my tent.

Day 2 I told my partner to go on his own in his better seeding and I started from K and ended up feeling good and only 20 minutes slower than him.

Day 3 - fevers all gone, battery a little flat but we rode together as a team until my partner fell and broke a derailure hanger some km's later - his race was done and I continued to a finish alone.

When I finished through the beach section I really chocked up as I had never imagined from being so poorly at the start I could ever manage to get there.

Also managed to get an extra medal at the finish for my Mate who deserved it after all we went through.

Brilliant trails and event

We ended up 47th. Happy for a top 50.

Legends! That was my ambition as well, hopefully my 2014 partner steps it up & accepts the challenge I gave him to get on par with me on the MTB scene, we are already on par on the road scene but he already said it won't ever happen again. If that fails I definitely need a partner stronger than me.

Google translate makes that a very funny statement. I think that was us. My brother on a Niner with a rigid and I had a silver Contraband. I wasn't sure I was going to make it up there without putting a foot down but I did. The downhill and single track after that is simply sublime. Thanks to you guys for keeping everyone going. Luckily for us we had no issues but I know how important a tech zone can be. Thanks Swart Kat.

The mineshaft downhill after the climb on a rigid must have been sport.

I've been on both ends i.e. the weaker rider 2013 & the stronger rider 2014, so know exactly what I'm getting myself into thanks for the concern though.

Massive thanks to guys from Morningside Cycles who stopped and repaired my broken rear derailer cable 20kms into Stage 1. Fix lasted until 10kms to go on the final day.

You guys were absolute legends!
