Which full-suspension; Giant Anthem or Specialized Epic Comp?

Hard to get objective views on the hub, but here's my 2 cents.

I owned a Giant Anthem and a Specialized Epic Expert and used to ride them both for a while. The Specialized is a much more refined bike. The suspension is stiffer on the Spec, while the Giant has a much more plush suspension. The Giant feels like you're in a boat where the Spec is like a sports car with very hard suspension. The Spec brain is an absolute winner. IMO, the Spec has more pedigree and has more brand equity. Don't get me wrong, the Giant was not a bad bike, just not in the same class, even if it doe have some better components. One big issue with the Giant is that the frame breaks at the seatpost. Everyone I know with a Giant bike (Alu) has had this problem. Check if they have fixed this issue since. And yes, they do replace the frames, but thats a pain each time as the bike is out of commission for 2 weeks at a time. Spec frames to my knowledge have never had any design flaws. I would rather take a frame that does not have design flaws.

So in my opinion, its the Spec all the way. You'll enjoy it more and feel better riding such a polished product.

Also dont forget about that little wonder below your butt, the Brain rear shock.....

Can't say I liked it too much tbh. Different strokes I guess.

On the flats and ups, maybe. On the downs, fun = fast!

No difference between a Anthem and Epic on the downs. Purely rider skill. Some might be faster on the epic, some faster on the Anthem. On the flats, the Epic absolutely murders the Anthem. anthem is still a great bike. Just wish Giant would make one with better specs. Full carbon, carbon wheels,xo or xtr or xx options. Like the Epic range goes from R30 000 to R 130 000. Many options.

If anything the epic would be better on the downs. Shorter chain stays, slightly shorter wheelbase and a slacker head angle (by 0.5 degrees)

But - I still prefer the suspension design of the giant.

I love how you are always very deplomatic and calm. Really. Giant just needs a pimped out bike like a s-works. Sure it would be very good.

Yeah it would. But then again they're a "value" brand with exceptional performance to price ratio. So as much as I reckon you're right, I don't think they will.

Still - a Trance with carbon hoops, xx1 etc would be brilliant. And probably 20% cheaper than anything else in its segment

Exactly. thats why I always wonder why Giant dont have some higher specced bikes. There is obviously a market for it.

The brain shock is horrible, if you want to race go for it.

If you want a bike that is not so mass produced look at rocky mountain element

Been on a hardtail for more than 16 years. Just moved to a rocky mountain element msl converted to 27.5 loving it.
