What the heck is everyone doing that they have to spend thousands of Rands after a single ride? Mountain bikes should be made to handle a bit of mud...

I thought so too, everytime its wet and muddy its a service, brake pads, lost a derailer in the last wet race. Heaven forbid you have a expensive dual suspension.

Every weather report gives a different account on what Saturday will be like. Some good; some bad. Still not sure whether I'm going to go or not.

I looked on my Endomondo route last year and saw I did 57 km. I think I remember that there was a mix up between the long and short route and I ended up getting sent the wrong way by the Marshalls. I think the 50 will be the route for me this year.

Not to bash spaz, but my mate riding it reckons they are way more maintenance intensive.

I reckon losing a jockey is very unfortunate, and is worst case scenario. Unless you bash into rocks that will hopefully never happen to you again. Drive train wear is a pain though, I hate that horrible grinding sound when you have a fresh drive train.

I always tried to time it that my drive train is near shot by the start of winter, then I stick with it through winter until summer, then I replace chain, chairing, cluster and jockey wheels as necessary .

That is still cheaper than the R1000 bill after every muddy race. Chainsuck is more noticeable, but riding through winter is more fun when not worrying about drive train wear. Oh, and this will be mostly deore/six level components, fancier stuff gets used through summer.

That used to be my method. Now when it looks like rain, I grab the Singlespeeder, wether it is a race or a day long cruise with friends. Racing on the SS is lank fun, but you adjust you're result expectancy down. Paying my own entries means I have no one that I want to impress any more. maintenance on the SS is ridiculously low.

Rain looks very heavy for tomorrow with showers on the morning of the race. My bail on this one...

Next weekend is Burger mtb, I am going to save my bike for that. Looks extremely wet tomorrow, and still raining Saturday.
