Can anyone tell me when does a mtb ride become an official event?

In my opinion it will depend on what you're trying to achieve and who you're trying to convince that it's an event or not. I would look at a few things:

1) Amount of people

2) Whether it says "official" anywhere.

3) If it has fixed organizers

4) What is the motivation of the organizers:

5) Are they trying to organize an event or a social ride

Ek verstaan nie

If one gets a group say of 50 people together and organises to ride say for 6 hours on a track is this now an organised event and does it have to be sanctioned by CSA

It is an event but it will be classed as social. I guess about 50 riders would take part maybe more.

When the "Groot Oom" stands in front and tells you that you are not allowed to ride with earphones, action camera on your person (head and chest) or sleeveless tops...........with a clipboard in hand obviously.

THEN IT IS AN EVENT!

What is the reason for the question?

What is the reason for the question?

We are trying to organise a fun ride but I have been warned that it could be an official event.

specifics Bob, specifics.....

Trying to arrange a 12 hour ride where you do laps on a short course. Have invited other clubs to join. There will be prizes but it is supposed to be a fun event. I am worried that we go ahead with it and it is now an official event and we will get into trouble.

Its an event, specially when there would be some prizes and someone can get hurt. Be careful of the risk of liability. People are dumb and they get hurt. If you host an event you have a duty of care, very vague legal term, but means if someone gets hurt on your watch, you may be held responsible as "event" organiser.
