forget the HR monitor..

you probably have an idea of what pace you can bike and run (usually ends up been the pace you have trained at) focus on that..

swim - warm-up

bike - ave km/h

run - ave min/km

* if you ***'n off to hold that pace, ease up slightly and save it for the last 5kms on the run

Thinking about my 113kg frame and smashing anything in one sentence is making me nervous!

90% of the triathlons I have done have been in the 110KG region.

Dont fool yourself into thinking you can compete head to head with the 60KG crowd, just enjoy the race, push yourself and enjoy the accomplishment.

In a race the only time HR matters is when it is stopped.

Focus on how you feel as adrenaline and all the others around you help in dragging you further and faster.

like everyone else, save yourself for the run, you will lose or can gain the most time there.

Great advice, awesome profile pic :D

Wearing your HR monitor could help you keep to the correct effort, it's easy in a race environment to overdo it and still feel ok but then pay for it later, typically to ride to hard or to start the run to fast. Don't be a slave to your HRM but use it as a tool to help judge your effort.

On the modes, I set up my own triathlon mode on Movescount, its a Swim then "other sports", cycle "other sports" and run. "other sports" = Transition

And I tend to also go on feel but just check my HR ever 10min or so. I have a "limit" in mind and don't push above it, the pain vs gain ratio just does not work out for me above the limit (mine is 84%). I normally have about 7.5% higher HR in race. Also just check that I'm not taking it too easy, then helps the mind to push if you see you below your normal level.

Rember to hydrate well the weekend (past 2 years were hot and windy), normally warmer than any training you did in last few months, dehydration sneaks up on you.

See you there the w/end

So how did the event go?

Event went well. Taking my training times into account I planned on doing about 4 hours - 2 bike, 1hr20 min run and 40min swim.

Ended up doing swim in 27min, bike in 1hr53, run in 1hr17 for a total 3hr46. I didn't feel that tired afterwards and was not stiff or sore in the following days, so I am satisfied.

It was my first one but I will definitely do more!

Fair enough, nothing like a PB for a bit of motivation.

The joy of triathlon....spending x number of races trying to get the balance between swim/bike/run right and almost never really getting there

Posted (edited)

All I did was to make it easier to get a PB with the next one!

Well done, the important thing is you still look forward to doing the next event.

Did u wear your HR monitor?

Nice one ...... first Tri is always about learning how tri's work, how yr body is working , transition activities etc.... my first tri was not trerribly enjoyable as I was focusing on the processes and procedures of tri's more than the tri itself..... well done, next is is an ultra..... :) then iron man ..... swim of 27 is excellent hey ..my brother in law who is a long time hard core tri athlete also did around 27 minutes.

Yes I did wear the heart rate monitor. When I came out of the water HR sat at 174 and went down from there and ended up at an average of 163.

Thanks. TriRock is in 4 weeks time and I will be doing that. I hear that it is an easier (if there is such a thing) half iron distance Tri. They say it is a good one ro begin with.

Then I am doing 11Global at Sun City in November and the 70.3 in January. The problem with Ironman is the price. I has to buy everything from the wetsuit to the bike so R4600 is a bit too much at this stage. I am trying to get a sponsor for Ironman4theKid as I am doing the 70.3 for them as well.
