  1. Hi guys I hope everyone is doing well. Before I begin, just a short recap. After my miserably failed attempt at getting myself in shape by taking on a massive challenge which I posted on here about, things actually started looking up and from 2018 to 2019, I lost a fair amount of weight. In fact, I went from about 128kgs at the beginning of 2019 to just over 100kgs by the end of the year. And then COVID happened. So, long story short, I'm back to where I started.....heavy and without a bike. I have now started looking at getting a bike again and my budget is R8k max. From lurking and reading on the internet for the past two days, it seems I have a few options: 1. Buy a cheaper bike like an Apex, cheaper Titan, or the like. These are available for, it seems, anything from R5k to about R8k. The problem is the components and, from what I read, the wheels might not carry my weight. 2. Buy second-hand. Here, the problem is that I don't know enough to tell good from bad, so I might end up buying a dud. 3. Buy an old 26er, and spend some money on fitting quality components and wheels. Now, my proposed use will be mostly to get fit and thinner. Ultimately, I want to do a triathlon again, but road bikes seem to be out of the equation now due to my weight. But, I'll need to buy a road bike in the future which means that, in all probability, I'll only use the bike in the interim. Any advice?
  2. Well, after my failed earlier challenge to do Cullinan2Tonteldoos (https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/164453-dont-call-me-crazy), I am in this year to try for some serious weight loss. I started the year at 128.4kgs, now at 125kgs and I plan to do low carb with intermittent fasting to lose the weight.
  3. Also looking to share a support driver. Looking at average of 260km / 24hrs[emoji51] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Hi Guys Seeing that I am busy with my training for C2T, I am looking for more places to ride. I stay about a 10 minute ride from Big Red Barn and I know it is packed on the weekends, but was wondering whether it is safe to ride there during the week? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Just bought a bike, so cant afford new tyres. Had to be creative for the pic! I do know that I need the best for all the training I am about to do! So I can do with a win![emoji106] #scottsportsafrica #maxxistyresSA #bikehubber @bikehubber Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Thanks Marius for gracing us with your presence here. It is not everyday that one is in the presence of cycling greatness. Unfortunately we were not all blessed with your genes and cycling prowess to complete the DC in 5h58. (Although I believe that if your time was more than 6 hours you would've said any that comments made by someone not doing sub 6h30 is irrelevant). In any event, have you ever thought of the fact that, notwithstanding the fact that you create the impression that you want to be as fast as possible, not everybody wants to complete the DC in less than 6 hours. One man's sub 6 is another man's finish. I have never been fast and never will be, but I will do everything I can to best that I can be, not better than someone else. If that means my best is a 16h59 Ironman, then so be it. I am proud of that. I suspect that many here will agree with me? So why be so negative about it? Nobody is forcing the bacon and eggs down your throat, so why try to force your opinion on us. If you don't like what is said on the LCHF forum, take your carbs drinks and be on your merry way. I think we will all be better off that way. Like JCZA said.... Couch Potato signing off!
  7. What I meant was not to train to lose weight. Obviously the weight loss will come as a by product but in the two months Ive not trained Ive gained flab although the weight stayed the same. Entering Ironman to get things on track is more a motivation thing. And my goal is 16h59[emoji12]
  8. Will do so. 4 months not enough time whilst banting or in general?
  9. In the past two years I have lost about 23kgs, mostly by way of LCHF. Ive also done a few half marathons, an ultra marathon (50kgs), 2 olympic distance tris and 2 half ironmans. In the past two months Ive let it go again, no training, eating junk and getting a boep again. To get myself on track I want to enter for Ironman next year and do LCHF to drop the weight. How would I go about training in the initial adaption phase, taking into account that Ironman is 4 months away.
  10. Hi Guys I have been trying LCHF before and from all of my efforts I seem to the best on this diet with regard to weight loss. I am doing Ultra Trail Cape Town in October and I still need to lose a fair amount of weight. My problem is the decrease in training when you start on LCHF. So I was thinking of living LCHF and fueling my training with a supplement of sorts. I also read in Paleo Diet for Athletes that this is possible (that you take carbs 15 min before training). I know the drawback is that you won't get fat adapted but I am nit really interested in getting fat adapted at this stage.....I just want the weight loss. Have any of you guys tried this and what supplement should I look at i.e USN Epic Pro, 32gi etc. Thanks
  11. Interetingly, I watched the highlights of the Ironman 70.3 and out of the top 5 males it seemed as is three (including the winner) didn't wear a HRM. The top female also went without. There must be merit in not using a HRM
  12. Hi Guys After several failed attempts to stay on course I now have great resolve to stick with it. I guess it has something to do with the suffering I took at Sunday's 70.3 when I tried to pull my 120kgs frame up that first hill. So on Monday I started again and I know that the beginning is hard. Tomorrow I plan on doing a long slow run / trail run, say for about 2 to three hours. Not being fat adapted I know that I won't be able to do it without carbs, but I want to limit the carbs intake as much as I can. My question is what do I take tomorrow during the run? Do I take an energy bar, a bar like race food, a rush bar or somethin of the sort. Or do I take something more natural like dried dates? Thanks
  13. Hi Guys I have done a fair amount of running throughout last year but all of the running was done on road. I now want to start trail running as well. I was thinking of going to Groenkloof but I have never been there and just want some more info. How much does it cost? Are the trails tough / can a beginner run there? Is it safe? Apart for the aforesaid any other tips will be appreciated. Thanks
  14. Which run would you recommend for during October and/or November
  15. Hi Guys I just want to find out if anybody has done the Spur Trail Series at Hennopsrivier. I want to enter for the 20km race but can't find much info on the net. I haven't done any trail races before, but I am doing TriRock in Durban and thought that this would be nice to do after TriRock just for the sake of doing something else and not the normal run. I, however, don't want to enter if it is not suitable for a first time runner. Thanks
  16. Well, if I cant decide I will just do both! LOL
  17. I believe that Comrades is tougher than Ironman as well. The thing that bothers me about Ironman is the time that is to be invested in training. I battle to do 15 hours a week now so I don't know where I will get time for more. But I think to finish the ironman is a feeling that makes it all worth it. So my thinking was either Ironman or Two Oceans and Comrades. Another one to thing about is Challenge Durban during May if not the Ironman.
  18. On another note, is it possible to do the full ironman on a little more than a years training. I actually started training in January 2014 (more running actually) and for Tri's from about April. I don't want to enter if I stand no chance! But the fact is I have to enter for something after January 2015 because thats how I keep myself motivated. How about Two Oceans and Comrades if not the full ironman?
  19. I was thinking of doing the Midlands one as well just to gain a bit more experience before January, but I see that its cut off time is an hour shorter than TriRock and 70.3 so I am afraid I wont finish.
  20. Thanks. TriRock is in 4 weeks time and I will be doing that. I hear that it is an easier (if there is such a thing) half iron distance Tri. They say it is a good one ro begin with. Then I am doing 11Global at Sun City in November and the 70.3 in January. The problem with Ironman is the price. I has to buy everything from the wetsuit to the bike so R4600 is a bit too much at this stage. I am trying to get a sponsor for Ironman4theKid as I am doing the 70.3 for them as well.
  21. Yes I did wear the heart rate monitor. When I came out of the water HR sat at 174 and went down from there and ended up at an average of 163.
  22. All I did was to make it easier to get a PB with the next one!
  23. Event went well. Taking my training times into account I planned on doing about 4 hours - 2 bike, 1hr20 min run and 40min swim. Ended up doing swim in 27min, bike in 1hr53, run in 1hr17 for a total 3hr46. I didn't feel that tired afterwards and was not stiff or sore in the following days, so I am satisfied. It was my first one but I will definitely do more!
  24. My first as well so a bit anxious, not just for the swim for EVERYTHING!
  25. Thinking about my 113kg frame and smashing anything in one sentence is making me nervous!
