should they legalise performance enhancing drugs?

I am a journalism student writing a report on the use of drugs in sports. The actual topic is: Why athletes should be allowed to use performance enhancing drugs - Obviously this is a rather difficult article to write. I was interested in your opinions on this matter? I am not asking if you use them, that is irrelevant, but I do want to know if you think athletes should be allowed to use them?

Hi Jenna-Lee

Gees, does your legturer want you to fail. That's probably the toughest topic you can get.

Maybe you should start by writing to the UCI and CSA to get the official reason why drugs where banned in the first place. Then you can just hand that article over for marking. Ok, but seriously, like dirt-rider says, drugs are not safe to use and do some serious damage.

It is mainly about protecting the athletes as guys on that level will do anything to win. Teams, managers, doctors, everyone gets involved and the poor athlete sometimes doesn't even know what he is getting. It get's dangerous cause he may want to win and live long, but everyone else just wants to win!

Read up on a guy called Tom Simpson. He was one of the originals and his story is an amazing one. If anything it may just give you a nice way to start your article.

I am a cyclist and am against it... but my article need to take a positive stand point for drugs. The reason I am asking this question is that I cannot find a single reason why I would back this up. The article is for Monday and I am still looking at a blank page!

Thanks The Break.

I think she is trying to teach us to write about something we dont agree with and try and find sources to back up it at the same time. But I probably am going to fail this one...

Ok guys I agree with you all - but what about the other side? The capitalistic gain - the more you win the more money you make.

Since doping is happening, albeit illegally, surely making it legal would also make is more safer - and also level the playing fields more since it will be their for everyone to use.

And umm are taking gels and drinks on the ride also not performance enhancing?

Just so we can be clear I think doping should not be allowed...

When does a substance become a drug ? 3 or 4 days before a big race we "carbo-load" . Why ? To increase our performance ! So then it must be an performance enhancement substance , not so ?

Slowbee has what I am looking for. Think about it this way. If everyone was allowed to use them (not all of them have negative side effects) that would level the playing field. Atheletes are using it regardless. I agree that sport should be about natural abiltiy, but what about the prospects of reaching your true potential?

Well, i also don't agree with performance enhancing drugs, but one argument you could possibly use is that they will put you on a level playing field if you believe those that say that all pro cyclists take drugs.
