I've been struggling with my second gear and while cleaning my bike i noticed that in second gear and on 1 or 2 at the back (whatever it's called) there's an odd noise - and its only when pedalling, but i notice the chain in connecting / rubbing against the silver bit ... 

 

what must check, adjust, fiddle with

uni, not sure what you mean but

 

 

you are either cross chaining i.e. big ring front, big cog at the back. This is a big NO-NO

 

or

 

your limit screw on your front derailleur (the silver bit) is not lekker and rubs when you are in your granny, (big at the back, small at the front

The barrel adjuster on your shifter needs to be released a little bit... turn it anti clockwise about a half turn and then check again.

I hate that scraping noise, which is why I run a gripshifter at the front on my Yeti, and no gears at the front on my hardtail .

I cannot adjust the FD so that there is no scraping

hahaaa yeah thanks for that - although in my case pics are because i don't know what the bits are called. I would have been looking around the back derailleur 

 

i shall adjust my barrel adjuster tonight and see if that helps - will revert.

If its not on your shifter it could be elsewhere along the cable routing

Problem Solving Check:

 

Turn the barrel adjuster 50% out or in from shifter position.  Do settings as per attached doc. Can't see whether you are running two or three chainrings. If three, set to middle ring and shift to smallest or largest sprocket, if chain rubs against outer plate turn adjuster in or out to fine tune.
