1 will be enough thank you.

The 1000 rule was made by another hubber, nothing to do with me.

What have you actually done to better the safety of cyclists in this country ?

This feels like it is becoming personal and that was never my intention at all. I respect that you hold a different view to the picture and understand why that may be. I have a different interpretation of it. Safe cycling.

As a cyclist I would rather put together a collage to make people aware of the dangers we face daily on our roads and would not make a joke about it. To make good of their oversight 94.7 should rather have another R94.7k competition for someone to create awareness by showing a picture of how cyclists and vehicles can share the roads and to show how vulnerable cyclists are on our roads when getting hit by drunken drivers, drivers using their mobile devices while driving, drivers speeding, etc, etc. Motorists are quick to point out cyclists riding two abreast or skipping red traffic lights, but they don't realize that cyclists don't have a cage to protect them and that the carnage on our roads are not caused by cyclists but by motorists.

This is only part of the carnage on our roads, many incidents out there does not even get reported in the news, but hopefully with social media tools more awareness will be created.

Every cyclist would give you a different interpretation, Nathrix. The point of the competition though was not to raise awareness about cycling safety nor, I believe, to make light of it.

No sober minded person would argue that cycling safety is not a serious matter, not even ugly little toads like Gareth Cliff. When you take the emotion out of the discussion and look at the context of the competition, an awfully big fuss is being made of a silly picture.

Like your approach to calling it a satire , you have no concrete proof except for your interpretation, that is yours interp. and this is mine.

No not satire...Satirical, there is a difference! and yes I think thats the point, different views and opinions and interpretations, if I didn't see it as Satirical I would have found the image offensive, but....same cause!

Wow really ?

As far as I know something satirical contains satire.

Mind blown **boom**

How, exactly how is it becoming personal.

Did you perhaps have the intention of making things personal when you very smirkily asked about the post count ?

I pointed you to the fact that I am not the 1000 post rule hubber, so why even mention it.

I asked you what you have done to better the safety of cycling and cyclists and you choose to dodge that bullet with "mommy it seems personal"

A picture of taxi, especially hitting a cyclist makes any person de-moer-in. We all hate taxis, and that's the truth.

Yes, I do know the competition was not about raising awareness about cycling safety. Unfortunately they miscalculated the huge commotion it would cause and people did not make light of it. Of course they are going to be emotional about it, it's very difficult not to be. The good thing about all this is that it did create more awareness. The sad thing is, it had to come to this, to create more awareness. Hopefully in future people will think twice, while considering the people who've lost loved ones, friends, family and national hero's on these dangerous roads of ours, not just in Joburg, but nationally.

More of a concern is that the listeners of 94.7 would actually vote this as the winner..... these are the ppl that we share our roads with btw.

I see the station has released an apology

I'm super stoked that for some of you this image was nothing more than satire. I would guess that the majority of you who feel this way have not had much first hand experience with the trauma of witnessing any of these type of events with your own eyes. Those that have probably subscribe to this type of satirical humour. And yes it has its place. But that place is not as the winner of the local radio station's public brand awareness competition!

Some commentators here are actively involved in moving the cycling safety campaigns forward and will never see the humour in this. As are many members of the public that have lived through any of the other issues raised by the controversial image.

IMO the desired result has been achieved, mods / Admin should lock the thread, its becoming a .... measuring contest.

No do not lock the thread!

Too many of these threads have lots of healthy debate and just when there's about to be some progress and some unity in action the thread gets closed because someone requested that and all the impetus from the community is lost. (Along with all the anonymous observers who do not invest the time to trawl through the other areas of the forum to find where the discussion has migrated to.)

Because we're not even arguing the merits of the image at this stage. My whole point was that it is open to interpretation and I was surprised at the way that the majority had interpreted it. If you took my comment about 1000 posts personally then I apologise, I didn't even think it was you who had stated that, it was tongue in cheek. I sincerely wish you all the best.

Is it humour? For some. Is it satire? For some. Satire uses humour but doesn't always inspire laughter. It hasn't in some quarters. Is it irony? No, but many of the reactions on this thread are ironic in that they ignore the fact that they are similar and related concepts.

Use the report button on the posts at the bottom to ask the moderators to remove the posts you don't like or agree with, you've been here long enough to know this. Locking the thread is not the solution.

YES really!!! ...let me explain, which i have now tried to do so many times and this is becoming so tedious i'm not even using punctuation anymore. Satire is a genre, saying something is satirical gives reference to qualities it may possess and in this case for me 'social criticism' is the only quality i have ever given any reference to. However the genre 'Satire' also does not have to contain any humor what-so-ever in order for it to be classified as such.

Now let me ask a question, do you think for one second, by using the word satirical, i have any less compassion for cyclists who have lost their lives and or been injured and I am in anyway diminishing the seriousness of such incidents?

Again, I merely answered your post which came across as the intention to be personal.

That post of yours had nothing to do with the image either.

Again I ask, what have you done for the safety of cycling ?
