Oh cool.

Okay great, thanks guys, I think I'll pick that one up. I appreciate all the replies!

Then - next thing - what other stuff do I need?

How long is a piece of string.....

To start:

1. A helmet and some sunglasses.

2. Some spares for running repairs. Multitool, tube, tyre levers and pump, (Even if you're going to go tubeless which EVERYONE who rides a mountain bike should do. Unless you take great joy in fixing punctures of course...)

3. Some form of hydration kit. Bottle cage and water bottles or camelback with bladder. (Camelback is a brand of cycling rucksacks)

4. Some savvy for making sure you don't do anything unsafe

5. Some humour for when you fall, cos it's not a question of if, but rather a question of when!

These should get you going and able to do some proper distances as well.

Good luck with the purchases and look out for riding groups in your area once you want to extend your saddle time! So much useful info comes from joining those that are learnt through years of experience, so you don't have to make repeat mistakes yourself!

Ett I have owned 3 Momsens, great value for money. I borrowed the AL655 Momsen for a week for the local agent here in East London. Good components and being a 650B (wheel size) it was an awesome bike to ride. Price wise its not bad at all.

Awesome. You guys are great.

If I can be a pain in the butt enough of a n00b, would any of you mind linking me to examples of the stuff listed above that I should buy - like the pump and spares and stuff?

I'm meeting up with the guy selling the momsen this evening. Stoked!

My 2 cents worth I started riding about 3 months ago, I was in the same position you in right now, I ended up buying a 2015 Merida Big Nine 20, bike has all  Shimano components and hydraulic breaks, pretty decent for 7K I also bought some kit to get me started I spent a total 13K from cycle Lab in Boksburg, this included a bike fitting!

13K Got me just about everything to get me going in the 2 months I have continued to spend more money on kit :whistling:  because I just cant help it I'm sucked in and I'm loving it. Will be riding the 30Km 94.7 as my first big race , my advice is spend what you think is sufficient, but be warned you will be sucked in this dark side of the world. so be prepared.

Ooops the Giro is a youth size. The first ascent is adult! Well spotted RB!
