Enough bloody moaning....its putting me to sleep!

Anyone got any funny stories about the event, that'll make a change :nuke: . I personally liked the sarcastic cheering and abuse some of the "heroes" got for pushing in at the bottlenecks. Obviously they were a lot more skilled than everyone else waiting patiently!!!!!!

Although the OP is a bit overstating his gripes I think there are a few things to consider here. Taking up the responsibility of organizing a race is just that a responsibility. This being the first race for the coarse, setting out in breaking the record books in participation numbers for a mass MTB event was probably a bit foolish.

It would seem that not everyone had the same experience as it would have depended on where one started in the race/adventure. For some it seems it was normal race conditions with some urban challenges you do not normally see. For others it was frustrating to be caught in what was for others playful day in the sun.

A lot of you say that not everyone can be pleased but then why invite everyone. Why mix a race and an adventure. Back to the organizers responsibility. They have to ensure at least that their guests are safe on the road and that there are at least water for people spending 5 hours being active. Then lastly I think it is a bit rude to expect that people enjoying a flowing competitive event and people just there to fill the numbers should be made to pay the same amount if they have such vastly different experiences. Waiting excessively at points is something the organizers have to accept blame for it. Surely organizers must be aware of the limitations of MTB courses in general and then the one they are building then why invite so many people if you can not creatively overcome the limitations. I am not going to organize a golfing event and invite 5000 people onto a 18 hole course. The same with MTB there are limitations and when they are reached people will be pissed off.

One poster got many likes for saying that credit must be given to badly designed pieces of course because they did it for free. Well the riders certainly did not enter for free. So not really the builders fault but the organizers fault.

The initiative seems great and I hope to join in the fun next year if I am sure I have a good enough starting position.

Good value. I started early and had mostly open track all the way so not sure where bottle necks could occur. It was a fantastic event that we desperately need in JHB as evident from the big demand and entries. Well done to the organizers to take the Initiative to pull this together. Plenty of marshals all the way. Tunnel could have a bit more lighting and a water table at Fratellis is a must. Novices would battle with some half meter drop offs and steep ramps. I'm sure this will all improve next time as seeding gets better and some of the more tricky technical bits are smoothed out a bit for all! Another possible solution is to use 2days and split the field in half with adventure on Saturday and race on the Sunday.

I was shocked to see that people were actually walking in the 'difficult' line. Why didnt they just take the 'easy line' from the start? ai ai

When I came in at the finish, people were still starting - and dismounting on the first grass decent...... must have been hell starting further back.

I think we need a thread with some consolidate constructive criticism and points to improve for next year - for what it's worth, here are mine:

1 - The tunnels and stormwater drains - need to be better lit and some consistency applied to putting ramps on drop offs.

2 - Medical/emergency care in the tunnels - given that these are ultra slippery - there needs to be better medical/emergency presence in the tunnel (even if it's only runners to call a medic) because phones don't work inside there - and god forbid someone knocks themselves unconscious, and lands face down in the water... Extracting a patient with a serious injury needs to be planned for, and stretchering someone out and then up one of those slippery ramps is not the way to go, and trying to treat someone in the dark is also not the way to go - I didn't see any medics prepared for working in the dark (they may have been, but I might have missed that)

3 - Ramps - I think the design of the ramps needs some modification - with a set of stairs alongside the ramp for the walkers/dismounters - while allowing the riders to ride it if they can, and possibly consider putting knotted ropes alongside the side for fallers to hang on to to clear the area - I was caught behind a small group on the Rivonia road crossing, and it was IMPOSSIBLE to walk up the ramp, and climbing up using the handrails was the only way (and those were NOT designed for that)

That's my list - fun ride otherwise, but room for improvement for next year.

I caught the best ever OH @#%@%# save for a guy in front of me when he lost control going down a ramp. No idea how he saved it. Will edit and upload a highlight reel. Caught a few.

I am always amazed at people that expect race organizers not to make a profit!!

All the crashes; because riders  do not have adequate skills! I really enjoyed it but can understand the frustration... Even at the "bail out sections"people took the more technical side and then walked!

The reason for this? Too many roadie races on dirt roads....back to cross-country to sort out skills!

I will ride it again! I just think split the race into three distances and make it clear that the 52 km is for advanced fit riders!

But overall, great to see Jozi from a different angle!

2 great comments I heard:

- "passing right" coming up to a big bottleneck (clearly joking)

- "the road race is in Durban" when people were trying to push in to a queue from the road

This is a big part of what makes an "adventure" like the JUMA fun.

I just wanna find out if anyone knows what the out come of the elderly gentleman who fell at the one river crossing at Bryanston side of the spruit.

He said he could not move his back/ felt paralyzed.

I was very upset and shocked to see this.

I hope that he is ok.

Anyone know his outcome please?

Had a blast out there, all the same gripes as the guys have mentioned already but I was mentally prepared for it and used the time to socialize with the like minded folks in the bottlenecks.

Felt bad for the youngsters that took some abuse when they were actually going for the prize money and got caught up.

My camelpack was empty by about 32km and my bottle by about 40km so the last 12km in the sun was tough and I took strain waiting for the next water point to be around the next bend, :-(, had i known I would have refilled both at the first table.

Will be back next year but will also be more prepared. PPPPPP

I know someone broke his hip... not sure if its the same person. If so, he is going for his operation tomorrow, so holding thumbs.
