What BB?

Hi guys

Currently riding a Momsen Al229 with a SRAm Powerspline BB. Looking to upgrade the cranks, but have no idea as to what BB my frame can take... I see most SRAM cranks use either the GXP or the BB30.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Powerspline fits into a BSA threaded shell. Anything threaded from Shimano or SRAM will fit, but if you're going GXP or Hollowtech you'll need to get the shell faced by your LBS before you fit.

I suggest that you upgrade to a two-piece crank (like Shimano Hollowtech 2 or SRAM equivalent).

Problem with the cartridge type BB's (like what you have now) is that there is so many versions (based on BB Shell length and Axle/spindle length) which may be a headache to find when you need it compared to the External BB kind.

Best to get the BB shell faced, may increase an external BB life considerably.

So I will be fine if I go for either the GXP or the BB30, as long as I get them faced?

Thanks for the help!

You get two types of BB30 so BB30 is not pressfit

PF30 = pressfit 30

BB30 = 30mm bearings directly in frame

The BB30 means that the crank is 30mm where other cranks are 24mm (mostly)

The PF30 an BB30 options require a BB shell that was manufactured for it. this is normally bigger in diameter than the previous "standard" bb shell

the BB requirement is set by the frame you have and if it currently has a Powerspline , then the only BB that will work is an external cup type.

You can look at GXP BB and Crank, or any GXP compatible crank (ie FSA ) or Shimano holowtec crank with it's BB.

Chnages are VERY good the BB shell has been faced already for the current bb you have in there.

the "facing" is acutaly just removing the paint and making sure the BB is the correct with, like excatly 68mm or 73mm not 68,1mm.

If you have  a vernier just measure it and see if it is exactly then just go get yourself a new crank and BB and fit it....you will need a BB cup tool. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/park-tool-external-cup-bb-hollowtech-ii-tool/rp-prod4062

Hollowtech external BB or Sram GXP external BB are what you want depending on the crank you buy. You can get BB30 for BSA shells if you really want - evobikes do one from Rotor Components and another from raceface, and there are 1 or 2 others out there. I think FSA MegaExo is a hollowtech equivalent but stand corrected.

Whatever you get make sure its for a BSA shell and you'll be fine.

Almost. BSA 30 or BB30 BSA, whatever you want to call it are available.

Thanks, this really helped a lot. So much confusion regarding BB's... I will look for a GXP and consult my LBS before buying anything

Almost, that BB will ONLY work with the rotor cranks.

"Rotor's BSA30 bottom bracket allows the installation of our 3D+ BB30 cranks into a standard"

http://www.evobikes.co.za/components/bottom-brackets/race-face-chinch-bottom-bracket-cups-bb30-bsa-68-73.html

"Buy this if you need fit a BB30 Crankset to a standard BSA threaded Frameset."

The rotor one also doesn't state that the Rotor one will only work with Rotor cranks - because that implies that the Rotor 3D crank will only work with a Rotor BB, thus making it not BB30.
