MTN riders all good. Relief. They must be finding the Tour just that little bit more chaotic then anything they've experienced before.

Must be a hectic day for a first timer. Tekhelehaimanot Tekelehaimont The Eritrean dude went down in that first crash but came off reletavily unscathed.

Kinda like Berto last year hey! Anyway I hope Spartacus takes the rest of the year off and comes back next year and smokes everyone in the cobble classics! One helluva rider!

No not like Berto, much much cooler!

Yeah but that's because Spartacus is the King of Cycling Cool. Such a pity we won't get to see him light up today's stage.

Hopefully Zbar will animate the race today and sneak in a win!

He's got 1 last piece of unfinished business: a world champs medal in the road race (has a few in the TT).

This year it's at the end of September in Richmond, Virginia, and seems to be a perfect course for him.

260km with short punchy climbs on the 16km circuit with lots of cobble sections.

Here's a description of the lap course:

All road races will take place on a challenging, technical and inner-city road circuit.

The peloton heads west from Downtown Richmond, working their way onto Monument Avenue, a paver-lined, historic boulevard that’s been named one of the “10 Great Streets in America.” Racers will take a 180-degree turn at the Jefferson Davis monument and then maneuver through the Uptown district and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Halfway through the circuit, the race heads down into Shockoe Bottom before following the canal and passing Great Shiplock Park, the start of the Virginia Capital Trail. A sharp, off-camber turn at Rocketts Landing brings the riders to the narrow, twisty, cobbled 200m climb up to Libby Hill Park in the historic Church Hill neighborhood.

A quick descent, followed by three hard turns leads to a 100-meter-long climb up 23rd Street. Once atop this steep cobbled hill, riders descend into Shockoe Bottom. This leads them to the final 300m-long climb up Governor St. At the top, riders face a 680-meter false flat to the finish.

That does sound perfectly suited to his talents. He has been an incredible rider it's almost funny to think he doesn't have a rainbow jersey on the road to go with his four TT rainbow jerseys. Hope he'll be ok on time and on form for it. Probably the finest cobble classics rider of his generation imho!

Him and Tommeke.

Edit:

I think this year is his last real shot at a road gold.

Next year it's in Doha, Qatar. Initially it was going to be a flat sprinters course, but the UCI weren't happy and told them to include more hills. Not much more info on the course at this stage, but Spartacus will be 36 then and with an expected sprint finish there's not much chance for him there.

Add in Stybar and Degenkolb and it'll be one helluva race!

Doha will be super hot, the weather and the racing, but ja can't see Spartacus taking that one.

jinne but that road is narrow !

also loved a brief moment yesterday when froome used an elbow .....

Brief moment? He always elbows someone, not always intentionally though, it's that crazy style of his. I reckon the bunch ride far away from him to avoid those skinny elbows.[emoji23]

OK, question for the knowledgeable ones... what is irregular feeding ? (taken from sky thread)

I assume it would be taking on food after the cut off. Flat stages it's at 20km and I think mtn stages 10km to go.. porte was fined in 2013 for going back and getting froome a gel on Mont Ventoux .
