2 years of commuting ...

Jo!

So the bike maintenance cost was about 2 months worth of Petrol, and in effect you saved about 22 months worth. That's a massive saving!

Out of interest, what tires are you using? I converted my bike to tubesless, and decided just to keep it like that until I have to replace the tires, may then go back to slime tubes and nice high volume slicks (like the Conti town and country)

I'm using the Serfas Drifter City Tyre ... 29x2.0 so it's fairly wide, but I like it that way. I prefer a little more volume on a tyre

I have been commuting to work and back for almost 30 years now. Unfortunately it is not far enough to get some good exercise in, being only 4km in the morning and again 4 in the afternoon. Here in Sasolburg we also have what is called "Green Belts", where I can ride to almost at my place of work without having to negotiate the traffic. And, after the odd instance that I need to go by car for whatever reason, the next day I am soooooo glad that I can cycle to work! It often takes me almost double the time to get to work by car compared to the time it takes my on my bike. Just imagine all the fuel I have saved over all these years!

I have a very cool Sigma computer on the bike. You choose your cars fuel usage, and it calculates the liters of petrol you would have used. The last time I checked my stood on 36 or 37 liters of petrol since the last reset. So it is a great motivator. One thing I do wonder though... How much time did I gain by not sitting on the tarmac idling away... How many trees did I rob or CO2 . And what would I look like in respect to my weight. I gained some 3 kg in two months by not being able to us the bike. Just think if I did not use the bike at all...

This sounds really cool! Which model sigma computer is this? I would like to look into this.

I've moved jobs this year and one of the biggest disappointments is not being able to commute by bike. It's in airport industria cape town, no possible route

As far as my understanding goes cyclists are not allowed on the freeways ? The cars are going a lot faster on the M5, the potential for a fatal accident are that much higher than Main rd IMO, although there is a lot more space to ride in.
