The Cradle is Insane

The guy with no helmet on. He is a black cyclist his name is Mandla. I saw him in the cradle two weeks ago. He was riding a old 5 speed steel bike. I rode next to him and talked to him for a while. He is training for the 94.7. Loves cycling and does what he can to get out and ride. Does not have much if any money but is studying bussines at Damelin. No idea who is paying for that.

I had my first bike, a aluminum 10 speed Schwinn, in the garage not knowing what to do with it. The cycling bug bit and I now have a Pinarello and a Cervelo so a aluminum Schwinn is really a waste on me. I took him back to my house and gave him the bike, it was in pieces. I also gave him a few cycling shirts, gloves and sunglasses.

In the week since I gave him the bike, he has put it together. He came to show me the bike at Broadacres and did a 100km ride with me. He does not have a helmet as he cannot afford one. Maybe somebody could donate?

I am on the bike next to him. Yes I did pull the socks up a bit high.

We were not riding with the club. They came past us.

Did you give him some assos shirts. A guy came past me on an old banger wearing an Assos shirt. That did worry me.

What size is he?

He is quite small. He was wearing a old long sleeved assos shirt but that has seen better days. I gave him some Biogen shirts I got at some show. He would definetly take a small of a medium.

It can be hard to make sure something you want to give away goes to someone who will actually use it. Good show mate.

Looking out the window now, the next thing this guy will need is a rain jacket!

Okay so i saw him in that shirt. He was going like the clappers.

I am XL to XXL, and my helmets are too big as well.

It really was a bit worrying knowing that the shirt he was wearing costs R 2000 when he is on an old bike. You know the whole thread about stopping people on bikes that it looks like they cant afford. I was a bit surprised to say the least and luckily didn't ask him where he got it....

I met up with him this morning and sorted him a helmet, jersey, arm warmers, riding glasses and some race fuel for the weekend.

Seems like a super nice chap, so if you see him in the cradle give him a word of encouragement.

Nice one guys !!!

The last couple of weeks have indeed been mal in the cradle. On Saturday morning I thought I would be the first guy to park at my normal spot (valverde) as I got there at 04:55. When I got there i was gobsmacked to see a numb er of cars already...guard at Valverde reckons the first guy got there at 03:45 !!! WTF....

But we must remember , the healthier the sport is , the better for all of us.

I have a pair of road shoes for him if he needs, cant see in the picture if he is wearing cycling shoes or not. They size 44 so not sure they would fit if you say he is a small chap.

PM if you think he can use them
