what are people pakcing - I want to ride with everything I need and will just put stuff I may need in the box - more also to leave stuff I may not need

Starting at 18h00 means you will have all the kit you need in terms of jackets arm warmers and leg warmers etc with you - I just wonder once it gets warmer what do you do with all this stuff

Possibly leave it with a box at the checkpoints ?

Also any advise from previous races what is a must to take with - things people tend to forget/overlook but may really need

I have all the basics like a light a back up light and another back up light :) I think that should be enough lights ?

Gettting seriously close now

And to add to this, do you guys pack in an extra set of kit....shorts, shirt, socks, gloves?? I mean, it can get long out there with one set of kit...

I will definately add additional kit in the boxes. It was sooooooooo nice to put new socks on in the Trans Karoo. I reckon clean bibs might feel just as good, but how much time do you want to lose? This train of thought will end with a shower and a nap.

Which one are you following?

360NE MTB Challenge - Intermediate COMPETITOR (8 week) - really just looking for a finish without too much suffering and time in the saddle.

Only started with it at around 7-8 week mark. Hope it is adequate and that I had enough fitness going in. I wanted to divert slightly and combine one weekend's Saturday and Sunday sessions into one looong ride, but family responsibilities interfered and it just did not work out that way. First chance would be next weekend which is prob too late for a monster ride.

Got some tips from long distance athletes.

1. change your kit, brush your teeth and wash your face at the halfway mark

2. Remember to eat and drink and lay off the sweet stuff

3. Get out the saddle every 10 to 15 km and stay out for half a kay.

4. Re-apply Chamois cream often.

5. Pull on the pedals every now and again to relieve the pressure caused by your feet contacting the same area for long periods of time.

At about 2am or so in the morning i decided to turn my light off, my Helmut light on and my ipod volume up. I was riding a section at about 26km/h and hit sand, the beach sand type. Needless to say it was a quite an unexpected sand pit, my bars twisted and i was high sided off my bike.  I tested the ground hardness as well as had a bit of a taste tester. When i stood up it hit me that i was completely alone and had been for the past few hours. NO ONE was close by me for quite a few Km's. Though everywhere my light shined and amongst the dust there were just ostrich eyes watching me...Im sure they were pissing themselves.

Make sure your lights stay on!

Also watch out for the little kids on the sides of the road, some as young as 4 yrs old were holding puff adders from sticks giggling..take lots of sweets for the kids they will love them and they have seriously NOTHING but the rags they wear.

They will cheer you for you all along the road side and all night long. They will even run next to you for a while if you not going to fast.

I hope those puffe adders was dead!!! I am riding solo and my worst fear actually above the riding alone is encountering a freaking snake

Hijeck. After the breedts north south climb you pass what was the spaza on the right. The road curves left and you arrive at the T junction. Do you go left and then left again to that treetop tours venue(name escapes me? Then do you ride right back to the hekpoort road and repeat the loop?

Sorry about the late reply.

The loop pretty much sounds correct, the Spaza shop is now becoming a proper little shop hey:) Also they have a fresh stock of the little coca cola glass bottles and clam their new fridges are colder than the last?! Buddy the Canapy tree top tours is on my mates property. Very very nice to go go take walks into the gorges and mountains.(appointment only)

We never got to do 2 full loops as the weather/storms started getting bad. We did how ever do 1.5 laps. total was 128km. Nice day out...hehehe
