It takes planning on their behalf...i'm sure they did not need your bike for the whole time. Its much the same here in switz unless you book it in a few weeks before the time you wont get it back in 2 days in peak season.

TBH imo 1 days notice is not enough for them to have it out in a day or so especially at this time of the year in SA

At least they told you it would take till next week

Problem is most LBS are not like the well oiled machine that you find with big name motor dealers who have invested huge amounts into equipment / training and techniques to make it possible to do a basic service in a few hours...if that

Makes sense that the motor dealers have the finance available to stock a certain amount of parts, which can really make the turn around time alot quicker.

As I stated when I started this post, I am not complaining, and have not named the LBS because I feel that it is standard practice among most shops, and has therefore become acceptable.

Maybe I will start a new shop that does same day servicing, not a shop, just a service center for bikes.

Lucky you did not take it in for a Shimano 105 wheel hub replacement, according to local importer it will take 6-12 months for delivery.

I think cool heat don't keep much stock of certain things. I bought a new road bike in April and it had the new 6800 ultegra compact crank on. I don't ride compact and wanted to swop it out for a normal 175mm 39/53 crank. LBS spoke to cool heat and where told they would only get in 2 months. I ended up buying one from CRC and got it 3 days later and then tried selling the compact for same price I paid for the CRC crank. Had it for long time and only just recently sold it making a loss of R1200.

Wait, let me get this straight.

You wanted Coolheat to swap the crank for the one on your new bike ?

No. My LBS was going to get a non compact crank from coolheat and swap it with my new compact and then sell my compact. The LBS was quite happy to do that for me but unfortunately coolheat never had stock of non compact. Sorry for the confusion.

I did advertise it on the hub. Only hits I got was one dude offering me some chocolate milk and another wanting to swap it for a FSA crank. My LBS reckoned they get a fair amount of people wanting them and that's why he was happy to swap it as he was sure he would have sold it.

Just pulling your leg, thought some of the chaps on the online racing thread might have appreciated compact gearing on some of the routes they race

Iv checked that online stuff out, Looks pretty cool. Only problem is I don't have a trainer that is compatible. One day ill buy one of those cycle ops trainers and join in. But ill maar stick with my non compact crank!

I will never again let a shop service my bike if they say same day collection again like Linden Cycles did.

Chain was lubed with grease and then waxed over the grease - time i lose to fix it

front brake rotor had something spilled on & not cleaned - time i lose to fix it

no chainstay replaced - have to find one myself now

rear derailleur jockey wheels weren't replaced as requested - time i lose to do it myself

no shock service was performed as requested - had to leave bike another day anyways

leftover grease all over the front fork- very annoying.

i can go on...

quality vs speed always from now on.

I'm no bike mechanic and the things I've needed fixed or sorted I've generally just sorted out myself. I'm not saying I've done a good job ... I've certainly done an adequate job. I've saved myself a fair amount of money and additional hassle trying to deal with poor service.

I have had great service from 1 particular LBS which I did a post on so not going to go into that. But generally speaking my dealings with most LBS's is poor service, no matter what you're looking for or need done. The LBS industry must be fairly cut-throat as there are many around all competing for a share of the pie, however the attitude towards service says an entirely different thing ?

We as South Africans have come to accept sub-standard service mostly because that is what we get, and this only just annoys me even more because I'm sure we can all agree that it shouldn't be that way.
