Randburg to Sandton

Seriously hating traffic at the moment, more than usual...

I have thought about commuting many times but the hills on my route are mad and it seems a bit of a ludacris idea...

Just wondering does anyone do this commute and what is your route?

From Randpark (Corner Republic and Rabie kind of), to corner of Grayston and Katherine... I think this is rather optimistic

When I lived in Jhb I commuted from Linden to Woodmead (Harrowdene office park). I had a stretch of 36 mtb commuting days in a row at one stage, but usually I would ride my mtb to work 3-4 days per week. Decent shower at the workplace is essential.

That was in 2008, I don't know what the areas along the route are like now.

Been doing a route from Northgate to Harrowdene Office park for the last three years , did 5000km last year in commuting not a single problem

Currently commuting to West \sandton drive

you should be able to find a decent route with some careful planning.  i'd go for it, once you get used to it that ride will make you strong!

I used to do boskruin to sandton rivonia rd. easy... Takes around 40 to 45 min if you obey traffic rules. I took main roads... Only section with no proper shoulder is republic from the waterfront to jansmuts.. Rest is fine

Not optimistic. Def possible

Depending on the season I commute to work 1-2 times a week. Im close to Northgate about 18 km from there to Discovery Health. Just be prepared to ride on the pavement on some places and the shortest routes is not always the best.

I have tried atleast 20 different routes, and picked the safest over the shortest etc

If you want I can make a detour after the 94.7 and commute with you to work.

I have worked out a route for you based on the routes I know. only 12.8 km, seems def do-able in my mind.

I can share the route with you on strava if you follow me http://www.strava.com/athletes/1626020

I used to do this route...from Berario (Northcliff) to Rivonia (edenburg) and like has been mentioned the only slightly suspect section is along republic between malibongwe and jan smuts...but one can jump on the spruit trail and go thru linden...

Used to take me 45min on road and an hour via the spruit.

I do Boskruin to Sandton (c/o Rivonia and West) occasionally. It's 15km and takes me about 50 minutes taking it easy. Climb into Sandton is pretty steep but by that time you're warmed up.

I have a pretty good route:

- Up Silver Pine to Sasol on corner of Rabie/Malibongwe.

- Cross Malibongwe, through barriers, then down (and up) Ash.

- Keep left in Maid Marion, then right in George.

- Cross Bram Fischer along George and Standard.

- Left into Gordon, then all the way to Jan Smuts T-junction.

- Right into JS, then I take the dirt track to the left just after the Spruit. (Steep drop)

- Through the barriers onto Athole .. becomes Balmoral

- Right in Stirling

- Cross William Nicol onto Argyle / Empire Pl (I keep on the dirt verge on the right as its pretty narrow)

- Up Empire Pl, quite steep and pumpy to Rivonia (although narrow, cars don't go too fast up the hill, so not too bad ...)

- Left into Rivonia, right into Katherine ...

- Bob's your uncle ...

Notes:

- I leave by 05h30 latest, the ride is much more pleasant with less traffic around.

- I ride a MTB, easier to jump pavements and for the occasional dirt section, potholes etc.

- My route pretty quiet traffic-wise but keep an eye open in Jan Smuts / Rivonia / Katherine, be visible!

- In the afternoons I take a very roundabout route home (along spruit, over Northcliff) in order to get some extra training distance.

- I've never reversed the route as described but it would be fine with a slight deviation:

i.e Avoid Gordon up (very busy in afternoon). I would go up Spruit a bit and then go up Bantam Dr (next to Delta Park) and then cross Bram Fischer using a bit of Conrad before joining route again ..

That's about it, enjoy ...!
