Help - has anyone got one and can give me some information about the quality and reliability of the data it produces? Is there a website that has tested the product? I would like to get started using power training but not sure want to go the whole hog to a powertap.

the WildDog has one. Overall they are fairly hated due to difficulty to calibrate, not as acurate and has a habit of dying on you, then you lose all data..... But cheapest option.

Of all the "problems" mentioned above I can honestly say that I didn't have 1 problem except when I snapped the cables leading into the "head unit".  As for accuracy, I wouldn't know about it, BUT the unit was consistent!

well, consistency is more important than accuracy. I dont have ANY experience with ANY power meter, just what i read on reviews and other forums.

I owned the old type and now also one of the new ones for my tandem. Would buy a used PT instead for a single. In fact i did - a while back.

Ewep, pick a slight steady gradient hill and keeping your speed constant go through the different gear combinations - about . Bet that you see inconsistency to some degree.

Mackem, for a Sunderlandboytjie it should be easy. Aren't you just supposed to tak'em?

Anhoo, it all comes down to budget and purpose.  I would like to get a PT, but when a Polar power sensor came up for R1000 it was too good to resist (plus I have a s725x, so it made sense.)

Like ewep, I snapped the wire leading to the head unit and that killed it.  I just got it back this morning and I'm happy!  Took me 1h30 to set it up, but once it's set up it works.

There are lots of comparissons on the web and it basically boils down to the fact that the Power-Tap, Polar and SRM all do the job required.  In other words they fit the purpose!   Basically, the Polar works.

The only issues that I could find that are real weaknesses are that the Polar only takes readings at 5 second intervals and the PT and SRM at minimum 1 second intervals.  Important if you want to get your 5 second pek power output! The other one is that it struggles with indoor trainers in the low gears (the Polar works on vibration and the IDT can interfere).

So:  The Polar does the job, but if you have the money and don't want the hassles of lots of wires.  Get a Power-Tap.  The issue with the power-tap is that it is wheel specific.  So you need one per set of wheels!!!

Anyway, I'll dig around for that web study...

Windbreaker, I agree i.e. consistency. But for someone starting to meddle in the field of power training I found that the Polar worked fine. If I had the bucks I would buy a SRM without thinking twice, and that is the Polar's big advantage, price.

The new Polar power allows for 1 sec monitoring. So that's one of the points on the wishlist.

One downside of the Polar is that it looks like SH|T on the bike, period.

Thanks Guys for the assistance. It seems as there is no definitive answer wrt power monitors. I have heard horror stories about the SRM and the Powertap - and that the Polar's are a bitch to fit. The only reason I am leaning to the polar is that I have the CS600 and only need the power sensor (which I think that I can get for about R2,5k) compared to a second hand PT for R5-6k.

Mackem, I had the old power sensor for the S series bikes.  I've heard great things about the CS series power sensors.  Maybe PM Cruxpearl.  I think he has one on his bike.
