Wanting to go Dual suspension

I need some advice…

I have a 2012 Giant XTC 0 29er. I want to go dual suspension. If money was not an issue I would get a brand new Trance (more suitable for my riding style) or an Anthem.

There is nothing wrong with my XTC. Except for my brakes (SLX) the rest of the components are XT. If I want a similar spec’ed DS bike it’s going to cost an arm and a leg which I don’t have. I also don’t want to really downgrade and get a Deore/SLX bike. The brakes I bought 6 months ago and my drivetrain is brand spanking new (not actually fitted to bike, laying at home waiting for current one to give in properly).

Anthem and trance 29er Large frames second hand is not rare its non-existent. I’ve been looking for quite some time now and I only found 2, one was gone within an hour of the adds placement and the other was a 26er. And I don’t have the 12k to pay for a new one…

So what are my options? (I am not to brand specific) What can I get so that I can rebuild all my current components onto?

Or must I just sell my wife and buy a new one out of the box?

First of all there is nothing wrong with SLX brakes or components, yes XT is a bit better...and I would not really go through the expense of buying a used anthem frame, unless its very new. They are awesome bikes, but you have no guarantee on a used frame..I would sell the current bike and buy a new Anthem, even if its equipped with SLX. Upgrade it slowly, just make sure that you get a good suspension setup on the bike, as you don't want to have to upgrade those.

I agree with floatfox about not buying a used Anthem frame - seen too many reports of cracked ones. But I would buy a used Trance frame (they are stronger and sturdier), transfer the components and sell the HT frame.

Hub Classifieds, but I also haven't seen many of them around as frame only. You are more likely to find a complete one and then sell your old HT.

Edit: There is a medium and a large Trance 29er listed atm. Look at the comments as well, there is a guy wanting to sell a large frame as well.

I've messaged that guy with the frame...

A few failures shouldn't scare anybody off, nobody hears of the 100's if not 1000's of happy buyers.

I came from a hardtail to an Anthem X and love it. Have a 120mm fork up front and it's great.

I would say I am an aggresive rider with no problems, that being said I would rather buy new for the lifetime guarentee.

Coming from a XC rig you might feel more comfortable on the Anthem, if you are looking into going more trail, read that as doing more drops, technical declines, etc, then go for the Trance.

2 very different bikes.

I know they fixed the issue after a certain year model, so I guess if you can buy after that then it should be a safer bet. As far as I know the issue is also related to seatpost length and how far it's extended.

ja well im already on a 400mm post on a large frame, but thats with plenty left in the frame. a 350mm was just to short on the XTC.

or do as I did give the wife your old bike in my case a Anthem X and buy a Spez Camber problem solved

I just bought her a merida 1000 lite (hence why my DS budget is in its maai)

Stick with Giant. Their bikes are built like a brick outhouse. I am trying to break my XTC but to no avail(I want a Yeti). Save up for that Anthem or sell the XTC and get the complete bike.
