Earphones and Cameras mounted to helmets?

I stopped using earphones in races, agree it puts yourselfes and others at risk, especially in a tight bunch. I will ride with one earphone (left) when training alone, i wont fiddle with it while riding. Music never loud.

Respect others viwes on this. Whilst not trying to justify, playing radio in a car drivers are often less aware of surroundings than say one earphone on low volume.

This is exactly where I was going to with my argument.  If someone feels that it is unsafe for them to cycle with earpods then it is better for them not to cycle with it, but if someone is fine with cycling with it then he is pretty much at the same level as a hearing impaired person (assuming you listen to music at high volume levels).

I am one of those "evil" cyclists that do cycle with my earpods on .... always.  Sometime the music is switched on and sometimes the headset is just there to take calls.  I am however always aware of the traffic and cyclists around me.  I cycle this 94.7 with the earpods in.  And even with the music on, the volume is at a level that I can still hear what is going on around me.

The fact is that the reason some people have an issue with people cycling in races with earpods in their ears is that they very same people are of the opinion that they are not aware of their surroundings.  If that is the only reason then hearing impaired cyclist should be banned from races.  Personally I think this is a rule that is based on opinion and not fact.

And yes, there are times (like cycling up Chapmans Peak early in the morning) where the only sounds I want to hear is the grinding gears, the wheels turning and the waves breaking in the distance.  Then I do not want to hear anything else .... out of choice.

This post sounds (pun intended) like a poorly placed marketing punt.

I normally respond best to "Passing right", or "sorry, mind if I pass" etc.  your hub or gearshifts as no bearing on me letting you pass.

the gearshifts is for your own (i.e. the pedestrian or whoever) protection. I won't hesitate to shoulder or give a rugby push to the head if you are ignorant towards bicycles around you.

Why then while marshaling a race one gets so much abuse from cyclists who are asked to remove such devices?  Fellow cyclists need to inform other riders in a race that it is illegal and dangerous not for their safety but for others.!

i believe that marshals are there to assist us as cyclists and should be respected. Any cyclist refusing to obey a reasonable instruction from a marshal must be disqualified and banned from entering the same race the following year.

When it comes to camera mounts on helmets it just doesn't make sense - if you hit your noggin on a rock and the camera is in between the two, the camera and mount will just crunch through the helmet (and your skull).

Why double the weight of your helmet by mounting a camera to it, and have you seen footage of a helmet mounted camera

As for the headphones my performance has increased after I stopped listning to music while riding.

........at least you will have some great Youtube footage that will earn some money.

Having a helmet mounted camera helped another cyclist to catch a few dumb criminals when they stole his bike.....what he was seeing with his eyes was recorded by the camera......now if the camera was attached to the bike all recorded evidence (if any) would have been lost.

Mountain biking

Helmet: Rudy Project Sterling L (310g)

Camera: Drift Ghost-S (172g)

A little extra weight makes you stronger......smilar to resistance training.......even adding a 3L Camelbak for good measure.

What helmet do you use that is so light?

Bumping this thread.

ROAD CYCLING & EARPHONES

I've seen a few Cyclists riding with earphones lately and I wonder if it's a wise thing do to right now with so many cycling related accidents.

First of all when traveling on your Road bike the wind is so strong that you can barely hear anything let alone a car until it's right on your ass, so one must assume that the volume has to be all the way up to 100 for you to be able to hear anything and even then the music is barely audible. Yes it takes away the pain and makes the ride a bit more enjoyable etc... but is it really worth losing that extra 5% percent focus and awareness of what's going on around you? How do you detect a problem with bike in this situation?

I know i get the shock of my life sometimes when a car flies past me and I didn't even hear it till it's a few metres ahead of me.I used to ride with earphones but gave it up pretty quickly after a few close calls.

I don't know.. maybe I'm just being a sissy and there's no real risk involved here?
