Difference between Ikon EXO and Crossmark LUST?

I need 2 new tubeless tyres for my commuter. I currently have crossmark II and have ZERO issues with them for commuting. The most off road the bike see's is a dirt pavement but I mostly ride on the road or in the dirt on the side of the road(read glass and nails etc). My LBS said the crossmarks are being phased out in favour of the ikon and that stock of the last few crossmarks is limited anyway. They don't have any on the shelf and say will struggle to get. Is the ikon a decent replacement? remember I am going to be mostly riding on tar.

What I want: Tubeless, durability on tar, puncture resistant, 2.2 wide.

What doesn't phased me: how much grip I have on dirt.

I have always run my crossmarks at 2bar.

I am not a heavy rider even with my bag and extra commuting stuff on my bike.

I am prepared to try other brands(provided my LBS stock them or can get) but I have used a conti tyre before that didn't last long at all. I can't remember when one it was. I have just always used the crossmark so know the reliability of that tyre from maxxis.

I also had crossmarks front and back 2.1. Never gave me issues. Now I have the 2.25 Ikon on the back, 2.4 Ardent up front. Ikon has low rolling resistance for the flats and climbing, and the Ardent grips up front when descending almost any terrain. I've just replaced my back Ikon after 4500 trouble free kilometers with another Ikon. Could've pushed it maybe for another 500km. The front Ardent still looks new after 5000km. I won't go back to Crossmarks again, happy with the combo I've been riding these last two years.

Hi LWB,

Ikons come in at 150g lighter per tyre and provide bucket loads more grip.

A few more pro's would be that they are more readily available than the Crossmark, have the updated EXO casing, available in 2.35 width and come in skinwall option if you are into that look.

Personally run a Aspen 2.25 at the back and Ikon 2.35 on the front and for me that's more than enough.

The Ikon is a faster tyre...less rolling resistance, ideal as a rear tyre (XC) but can be used front and back if front tyre grip (for trails) is not paramount. I've been using one as a rear tyre and haven't had any problems.

This is what I want to hear. Not worried about grip or rolling resistance(in fact more resistance would be better for training) as it will be on tar mostly.

Thanks

I probably won't get that much as it will mostly be tar riding but that's cool. Have read that the sidewalls are thin but I think that is more the non EXO versions.

Not too worried about weight and grip.

Updated casing is always a plus. Think I will stick with the black sidewall. It's a commuter so don't need it looking flashy.

Rolling on Ikons front & rear on my commuter for about a month, no punctures and roll nicely on the tar (that lekka ggrrrr, ggrrr sound).Ikon 29 x 2.2, 120 TPI, 3C EXO TR.

Perfect. Obviously a month is not much to see wear but I guess with the crossmark being almost no longer I don't really have a choice. I will give them a go. How much did you pay per tyre?

R550 per tyre, didn't shop around as I like to support my LBS but the price seemed pretty good.

I've been riding Icons for a while now, really great tyres, they just don't last very long on tar... Not nearly as long as the Crossmarks do

I suspected this may be the case but unfortunately it seems the crossmarks are no longer. So they seem the next best option.

Not sure your lbs are correct...

Rush just brought in Crossmark 29 x 2.25 and 26 x 2.25 in the EXO TR version...

Wouldn't a high volume touring tyre be better suited a la Schwalbe Marathon?

Just googled it. I would still prefer something that can go off road(literally off the road, like next to the road) and still have a bit of grip. But I will be going to the LBS tomorrow and I know the stock Schwalbe so will ask if they got and see it in person.

Thanks for the idea.
