*bump* Longer chain recommended ?

How did you set up your chain, big cog to big cog +2 links min?

Since you have a SGS long cage RD, be careful you do not have the chain too slack as you have no clutch or chainguide and could cause the chain to drop off!

The chain was just moved across from the 3x10 setup without adjustment. excuse my ignorance..... but does "+2 links min" mean that I should have 2 links extra than a fully extended DER when I'm on the 42t?

If you google 'MTB Chain Length' you will get the info but generally you need to take the chain off the derailleur and wrap it around your big front ring, or only front ring, and your biggest back ring to get a basic length, then add two links minimum to give you your required length. Not sure if you need a little more for a long cage RD.

Strange that your chain looks short as you would of had 44-36 on your 1x3 and now you have 34-42 on 1x10, I would have thought your chain would be too long!

I went from 38-36 on 2x10 to 32x42 on 1x10 and had to add 2 links.

When you are in 42 on the rear, check that your top jockey wheel is close, not too close, to the 42 by adjusting you B-tensioner screw. This will make sure you have the chain set correctly.

Chain length is crucial for smooth shifting , I battled for weeks to get the set up spot on , I adjusted THE B screw etc etc , I read on a USA website that if You're in Your 42 which will be the biggest at the back , Your derailleur cage must not go past 90 degrees , In other words , if You look at Your derailleur from the side it must not past 90 deg towards Your crank , This worked perfect for My set up , It guided Me to get the correct chain length , I run a 38 and 32 , When I do Hills I change to the 32 , I remove 3 links , When I go back to 38 I add the 3 links ,Try this it helped Me to get The set up perfect , I run a medium cage XTR Shadow clutch rear derailleur , Ill look up the web site , and Ill post it , very usefultips there , good luck

Interesting, is your RD not nearly doubled up on itself when you are in 11 then? Mine comes about 10deg past 90, ie. 5 o'clock, in 42T and is nearly horizontal, ie. 9 o'clock, in 11T.

When you say 3 links, how do you do this as surely all links are male and female and can only be removed/fitted in pairs, or is 'one' link two pieces? I normally think of 2 links being one male and female.

Yes You're 100% correct , The rear derailleur is nearly doubled up in 11 , I run 2 power links , to make the swop easy . So when changing either way I don't need a chain breaker , So its actually 4 links if You count in the power link , 3 normal links , which end male male plus the power link .Another change I made were to bolt the front chain ring on the frame side(INSIDE)of the spider , Just to get the alignment off the chain more towards the bigger sprockets off the cassette . As I said This set up works 100% for Me . I nearly got the point off changing back to 2 x 10 , but as I said I got some crucial tips on that USA site that helped Me to get the alignment and chain length correct . As far as I can remember I GOOGLED 1 up or 1 x 10 , They explain cage length etc etc . As I read ," NOT IDEALLY IF THE REAR DERAILLEUR PAST 90 DEG" .Also good tips here

Consult the One Up website. They have very clear instructions as well as videos. If you follow that, I assure you, you won't go wrong. Also, if you have a dual suspension, remember to deflate your shock as well to see how it affects your chain tension and derailleur.

I think I was on 42 - 36 on the 3x10 setup, and now on 34 - 42, so overall slightly smaller setup now - but I never crosschained 42-36 although i did store with RD full retracted.

I've set both tensioner screws for upper and lower limits.

Going to add in the 2 extra links, definitely sounds like I'm too short. The shifting is smooth and i'm not getting any drops, even on rough, bouncy decents.

Yep.. based on your photos, chain too short. The RD should be almost doubled up on 11

Hi Rebelking ,

I have had a blast with my 1 x 10 conversion so far,

The Kalbo components have been absolutely fantastic, must say even the guys at my LBS are saying that the shifting is the best they have had form any product so far,

I have not once dropped a chain and i'm running without a clutch RD,   Even on the Magalies monsters shaking descents .

Bottom line - It just works !!
