I **** you not. So in short. it might be worth it to buy your helmet locally or carry it in. Definately not as simple as that... The last I knew your examples above attracted seperate rates: Clothing 45%Shoes, socks 40%Gloves 30%Helmets 25%Knee pads 20%Etc

Also, there are Low Cost Items which slip through without duties and / or vat, regardless of the description. I've just had some pads flown in, and it looks like that is the case here... Sub R 1,000 or so, I'm not sure of the actual value before they start charging.

Sub R 1,000 or so, I'm not sure of the actual value before they start charging.There's almost no limit on the lowest value they will charge duties/vat, it might be around R50 though, I've paid duties plenty times on items well under R200. That being said for some reason certain items do slip thr ough, got a parcel with an invoice value of R2700, duties/vat charged was zero. Apparently something like 150000 parcels entering the country each day, plenty must slip though the net.
