I'm rather new to all the technical stuff...  so excuse a stupid question...

I want to upgrade my saddle, what is the difference between road and mtb saddles?

I'm asking because if I find a good second hand saddle I want to take it, but don't want to buy something that won't work...

(I ride a Mtb)

Just get a Fizik Gobi. It's made for MTBing. The WTB and SDG saddles are also for MTB.

I use a road saddle on my HT and no problems. I know Spidey uses a Flite which is definately a road saddle.

Depends on yourself. I have a Selle Italia Kit Carbonio on my mtb and I'm very happy with it. See you Saturday morning for that social ride.If we are going through Zevenwacht we might have a problem as the routes are closed according to the owner.Something to do about the fynbos.

Like Mampara says get a Gobi. I use mine on both my hardtail zaskar and my road bikes. Its nice and comfy, and very similar to the Arione. Using a road saddle off road may not be the best idea, ask Jules, he snapped his Arione in half a few months back in a mountain bike race!

No people men must use a saddle with a cutout else you might shoot blanks in future lol......im serious though stay away from fizik go selle italia or something else

I would say buy a Fizik Gobi, I love that perch. But it may not be in everones price range. WTB have some decently priced options.

Look for something that has reinforced back and sides, to prevent damage. and not too soft.

I have a carbon, Ti and kevlar road saddle on my MTB.  Light strong and lots of shock absorbing.

Some selle something

Key word highlighted. ANY saddle not setup correctly will give your children flat heads. Then don't ride your bicycle, you might get run over by a car.

So that is the way to go....  No need for protection then.  Some road saddles have a cut out, but I find a depression is better.  Ever tried to do a naked lap with a cut out?

There's usually not much difference between MTB or Road saddles. Sometimes the MTB ones have some kevlar padding around the edges for protection, and some models are slightly slimmer so that its easier to slide off the back. Otherwise no diff. I ride with the same model on my road and MTB.

And take everyone's suggestions for the right saddle with a pinch of salt. Everyone's ass is different, so what works for someone else might not work for you. And unless you can get a loan saddle from your bikeshop (which most don't seem to offer), you'll go through an expensive trial-and-error process.

contrary to what rad006 says, go with Fizik. they are truly amazing saddles!

but niterider puts it best -  test ride them and chose the one that suits you. selle italia does NOT suit me at all. fizik on the other hand is perfect.

When I was at the bike shop yesterday I saw there is a new Fizik Alient out. It's for MTBing and has the kevlar around the edges. If the road one is so comfortable then that thing will be aswell. Pity it is almost R1300.
