My question to those monitoring their heart rates during races - what average of max heart rate % do you push yourself to (over the length of the race, not just that monster climb) and at what point would your avg heart rate reading start to worry you (in the absence of any obvious discomfort).

I used to average about 87% to 89% of my max heart rate for your standard 100km road race or 80km mtb marathon. However I badly hurt a heart muscle in a race during October and is now slowly making my very long comeback. Now I would just like to get a feeling what others consider to be a "normal" average during races (although I get that it would vary a lot between people), got a feeling I might have pushed myself to hard up until my injury.

Skuburra with a slight little cold a week before the fifty miler and a Gamin screen that failed on  the day, I decided to ride the 50 miler on how I feel.  Although I felt fine I had to drop back as I could not stay with my group.  When I downloaded my ride, I found that  almost 75 %  of the ride was in the top of  zone 4. With zone 5 being the maximum Zone     I also felt extremely tired and went to the doctor for advice  .  Did not get much sympathy and got a speech starting with : You cyclists........

I started slow and did very easy rides and made a point to not to go in the red zone and recover.  It took a few months before I was back where I was before.

But I also realize that I can count my blessings.

I hope you make a faster recovery or get more sympathy from your doctor.  :)

do u get a lower avg online, which is harder for you?

Online my HR average matches what my race avg was 10 yrs ago in 2 - 3 hr events, but doubt i can push the same avg for as long as i used to...maybe one day again.

Longest online race was about 75 min

Just sitting on the IDT I will maybe get 82% for an hour. When you guys and gals turn up the heat with online racing I will go to 92%. For me it is very real (with more sweat).

Very interesting topic this... been looking onto for the most part of this year as I cant afford a power meter. I have found from the online racing as well as online interval training a sort of correlation between my power numbers and heart rate.

For instance I have done an FTP test with my cycleops trainer and when im riding at my FTP level my heart rate is around 85% of my maximum. In a race I will keep an eye on these numbers so I know how much I still have left for the finish.

Another thing I have found is that from the online racing ive learnt how far and how long I can push myself based on my hear rate, for example I know its possible to ride for an hour at 85% plus without completely blowing up, this I then also use as a gauge in races.

I do think its all personal for each guy out there...

... if you're healthy.

Ahh yes here is the kicker...

To injure your heart from "pushing too hard" one would assume that there is a pre-existing heart condition.

Not necessarily... There are lots of research out there on how overtraining can damage your heart, especially for (but not only) older athletes. On the flipside, their is also research out there that shows that excercise can help repair damaged heart muscles, the key is to find the balance

I train trough my at 85-95% of Max HR although variable depending on temp, fatique / rest state

Racing often averages around the same

Must've been a viral thingie involved there with your injury
