Joint Pain

I need some advice on this please.

I was racing off road motorbikes for some 10 odd years. After lots of impact training, weight training, riding and a few thousand crashes, my joints are killing me, especially my shoulders. I'm 23 and feel like a 90 year old war veteran...

I've been to a orthopedic surgeon, and all he says is that my shoulders shows bad wear and tear. Then he injected me with cortisone (for the 4th time) and sent me home.

My question: are there any products that will actually help with this? MSM? Phyto Boron? Clucosamine?

I will be following this closely after years of ruining myself at jujitsu (I have theory along the lines of by the time you do get the much fabled shodan/black belt technically you are really good but you are too broken to actually use what you learned).

I tend to struggle with elbow pain after a ride along with other less irritating aches and pains.

I would also be interested. MX broken knee, then snapped ACL, surgery, 4 years ago & my knee is always sore.

Went to a physio yesterday, but the irratating pain in the joint and surrounding just stays.

Get a second opinion. Www.sportsortho.co.za is a good start.

I could understand living on cataflam at 43 but not 23. My shoulders are messed and I don't suffer with the pain you described at all and am closer to 43 than 23.

No - all pretty much snake oil.

Please try and avoid any more cortisone shots - they will help with the pain in the short term, but can do a fair amount of damage over the long term.

Rather find a specialist shoulder guy and go visit him.

Dr PH Laubscher in Rosebank.... for example....

Most of this stuff is boohaha.  However I still take Arthrogard every day "just in case"!  I have come across something called Magical Magnesium Oil recently and bought it at Dischem and so far so good.  Tastes like cr@p but will give it a go for a while to see if it helps.  Google all the good things Magnesium is supposed to do.

I struggle with my knee(Dislocated, tore the muscle and the tendon and damaged the cartilage)  and have had pain for a long time, i have been told i need to go for surgery again at some stage.

The only things that work for me is making the muscles stronger and Flax Seed Oil, the oil has helped me over the last 2 years and definitely suffer a lot less.

At age 50, I had managed to get up off the bed on Thursday, have a dizzy spell, black out and hit the wall with my head.  3 hours later, with absolutely no memory of what happened, I was in hospital having an MRI scan.  Spent the night there and the next day the Neuro Surgeon says nothing wrong with my head, must be my heart.

So another round of tests and scans with the cardiologist and another night in hospital and still nothing.  Given the all-clear to go home, so I say, well something must have caused this.  The answer....."You're getting old, take it easy!"

Oh well.  1 week rest and back on the bike tomorrow!

It's part of being active and such I think. The best you can do is strengthen your body so that when the inevitable bad crash happens you're prepared for it.

Just be thankful that your back and shoulders aren't sore because you're carrying around an extra 50kgs or struggle to get out of bed because your bop is in the way.

It's a payoff I'm willing to make.

its not a tablet and i exceed the daily recommended as i do with everything else.

i have taken many different supplements that are a lot more expensive but this is the only thing that has ever worked for me.

At R 120 a month it is worth it. Took a good 3-4 months to notice the difference. Benefit is that it is only healthy fats so still good even if it doesnt help.

DJ, this flax seed oil. Do you rub it on or ingest it?

You drink it (tablespoon a day), i take it with a shake so dont really taste it although it has little to no taste. This is a common supplement for power lifters and out of all sportsmen i think they suffer the most with joint pain.

I'm 55 years old and had sore knees and hips, particularly after hard cycling or long walks. I take omega 3&6 capsules every second day, or after strenuous workouts, and it works for me and cured any discomfort in hours. Note: not codliver oil or flaxseed. Maybe try the omega oil capsules, cheaper than running off to doctors. then if it doesn't help, then try next options.
