Funnily enough, I most agree with you on the littering thing - there is nothing that makes my blood boil more than people chucking $#it out of car windows, or walking on the street and just tossing their cr@p everywhere.  I suppose different things bother people in different ways.  I don't find a guy talking on a phone at a red light objectionable.  I especially don't give a $#it if a random stranger is not wearing a seatbelt

Well then we are almost similar...next is you will hoot at the littering person and get the same response I got

NOTAF#CK, when people chuck stuff out of cars I go BeF0K, rabid-like.  They mostly try to avoid eye-contact and hide their children.  If you deliver the message with sufficient psychosis, most people just wind their necks in.  May be different in Cape Town tho

Whaaa.....I am trying to  picture that...

Edit: But legally, do you have the right to do that? Just saying

But you'd lose on appeal

I'm not sure what line this thread has gone down, but whether the OP should have questioned the driver or not or whether he was endangering someone is not the point. Firstly it's illegal, secondly, have we as people become so dependent on communication that we can't even live without our mobiles for 20 minutes. We've entered an age of instant gratification... I think the problem is that people will only realize how dangerous it is when its too late and once you've caused an accident or knocked a cyclist or pedestrian down. I used to talk on my mobile all the time while driving, i've stopped because I don't want to kill someone and sit in jail for the next 15 years because of negligence...Not being self-righteous, I have just thought about the consequences and they are not pretty...

When you commute REGULARLY you see things in a very different light. Why? Because the volume of stupid drivers you encounter exponentially increases when you add the frustration of peak hour traffic to your daily trips with far greater numbers of motorists en route. Most people just drive k@k when they have no apparent distractions and yet you can see they have completely checked out and are on some form of auto pilot behind the wheel. Add a cellphone to this mess and you have to think for them, give them a wide berth and still navigate the annoyed buggers around them who are putting all their attention on them too, which just adds to your risk! So irrespective of whether he hangs up the call at the green or whatever other hidden supernatural talents he has, HANG UP THE FOOOKIN PHONE so that you and everyone around you focuses properly on their driving and don't run us commuters over!

Where do you commute from and where to?

Off yet on topic....

why do people with cars, which clearly have Bloutand still put the phones to their ears?

I see this A LOT, expensive German cars and their drivers talking on their cells....

Is it a "I dont know how to pair my phone to my car" thing or a "I think I look important on my phone" thing?

Where do you commute from and where to?

Started commuting as a practise entirely by bicycle in around 94. Was Claremont to the city. 96 I moved to Three Anchor Bay and was a shorter commute to Green Point. 98 I moved to London and commuted by bicycle to work for the 3 years I was there. Last year in the UK I worked in Hatfield and lived next to Finsbury Park. Moved back to SA December of 2000. Settled in Sunningdale and commuted to the City from 01 through to 11. (No cycle lanes for most of that time...) Since 12 there was a short stint from Lakeside to Mowbray but the past 2 years have been Harfield to Mowbray. Up until 2011 I would say 95% of work commuting was by bicycle, summer, winter, rain, shine, whatever. Used to average 200kms a week just commuter distance, before I added extra distance for training leaving earlier or riding longer with a detour in the afternoons Since 2012 it's been about 50% as the school run pick up for the 2 days a week I do the run has changed that option.

I've seen some seriously crazy stuff in all that time cycling, but am thankful that the infrastructure is starting to accommodate cyclists far more than ever before. It's a good start but so much more can be done.

My single greatest annoyance above all other safety issues, is people who use their mobile phone whilst driving. Yes, this was something I used to do myself, but seeing the stunts of fellow people in traffic has really altered my views on this practise! It's the biggest crisis on our roads and I fear with the next generation permanently attached to their phones this issue is only going to get worse!

That is some serious distance...I used to do the Sunningdale to Parow run and now Durbanville to Parow...

You see all sorts hey, from people smoking dope to a women breast feeding

It is scary how often you would see a car driving erratically (or sometimes the driver is not doing anything particularly wrong - you just notice that the car is "out of sync" with the rest of the traffic) only to get closer and see driver busy on the phone. Ironically I think the driver is usually totally oblivious of what a danger he/she is to the road users around them .

This is what convinced me to stop using the phone when driving, not because it's law or because I'm worried about getting a fine.

Haha, can only imagine what my Strava heatmap would look like if that had been around from back in the early days! But then, we wouldn't be having this thread conversation as the cell phone was only just starting to show its face back then and somewhat laughed off by most as an unnecessary accessory and extra thing to carry around with you.... No one even thought to use it while they were driving as it was too obvious that it increased your risk of having an accident trying to do 2 different things at the same time.

After cell phones, my next worse driver type is the woman putting on her makeup whilst driving, followed by the chap drinking his mug of coffee, reading the newspaper! (Yes, has it folded out over his steering wheel!) Still trying to figure out why some in car media player manufacturers have a DVD function on them?? Cycled past a guy watching a movie on the little 3 inch screen on the front plate of his CD\DVD\MP3 car player one morning. We had words. These people make taxis seem like the most considerate drivers on the planet!
