Cycling really the new golf? (yes I know...)

I play golf between 3 and 5 times a year. I enjoy the first 14 holes, but by then I just want it all to be over. It's just so monotonous and precocious.

Cycling gives better rewards socially and health-wise for the time spent.

I can't wait for developers to start building Cycling Estates with MTB course, BMX track, velodrome etc.

Steyn city in Jhb seems to be catering for both. No BMX Track yet but i am sure if the demand is made................

Golf has a lot of synergy with life , wait wait and wait than make the right move , strategic and competitive , hugely rewarding.

The handicap system allows all standards to share a game and puts you against yourself !!!

But I am here on hub not golf forum ........

I have played a lot sports at a half decent level, since I was a kid. But golf is by far the most difficult one, which requires the most practice to play a decent round.

Which for me is the biggest issue with golf.

You think you know someone until you play a round of golf with them and there true temperament comes out. Hence why most who slag golf have probably never properly tried it or if they have never had the patience golf requires.

And you have to book a time, where as with your bike you can ride anytime that suits you, which in today's world of fast food and everything express suits our life styles.

Yes, golf is incredibly difficult to do well. And an unbelievable test of mental strength. 90% mental...and 10% mental as the saying goes. Very rewarding to play and as poster above said, the handicap system allows pretty much everyone to be able to compete against anyone else. Golf really is a great sport.

I'm just finding it difficult to balance doing both golfing and cycling...and cycling is winning.

Golf is a great game, however I'm on the side that's converted to cycling, I still have my clubs and still play twice a year but cycling takes up less of my time and even if it took up more of my time its an activity that's good for me.

I could never get my wife, both my sons and myself on a golf course at the same time, with cycling we can all ride together.

I'm currently on holiday and almost 1 out of every 3 cars has at least 1 bicycle attached to it.

Gotta love it!!!

Golf does not make you drink...its a weak mind and peer pressure that does that.

Try carry your own bag for 18 holes (+/- 10 km's of walking) and see how much weight you put on

Indeed Swiss, perhaps we need to refer Charl Schwartzel to this thread, all 66 tea totaling Kilograms of him would have a good chuckle. Ernie Els at 45 is still slim and fit and hardly a drop of alcohol passes his lips. Tiger Woods maintains good physical condition year round and whatever his faults, been drunk on the golf course was not one of them.

Actually, come to think of it, in the more than 35 years I have played golf I have seen very little  drunk and disorderly behavior on the golf course. As usual, preconceived generalizations.

Maybe we can have a game together one day bud, I'll would carry your bag with pleasure.

Hi GoG

Would be lekker to play golf, if we play in summer in switz then we can use a trolley to pull our bags... its only winter or when the ground is very soft (wet) that you have to carry your bag

I've heard some stories about Ernie. I know he's changed, but he was no angel.

I have mates who play at the Lake Club, and, trust me, the amount of drinking that goes on there is scary.

I chatted to a buddy of mine recently (one of the top trail builders in the country) who is currently changing a golf estate into a MTB estate somewhere in the Cape. I know I should remember the name as it was quite a popular golfing spot.

It seems as though courses are just too expensive to maintain, take up too much space and use too much water.
