Broken Glass at Cradle Route

I'm not giving you all my ideas!!

No seriously, it's not like there a millions of residents in the first place, last time I was there it wasn't exactly as populated as Tokyo!

My comment was more aimed at those few who see the cyclists as pests not the general cradle population who just get on with their lives and already have businesses there.

The broken glass is not some malicious attempt by locals to annoy cyclists ... I reckon its not even locals for the most part but sheer assholes who are driving around on joy rides in the cradle and throw bottles out of cars(after a wedding or party at a venue).... a lot of the glass I have seen is green beer bottles hence my opinion.

the amount of glass recently has increased and that's prolly increased holiday traffic responsible for it...lets face it if the locals were pissed with us I think they could be more ingenious that broken glass in the lane....

I'm inclined to agree about it not being locals specifically. Maybe it's kids on their way through the cradle on their way to a party.

There was a cyclist last year who went into the cradle during the week with some labourers and actually swept up the worst of the glass. I also saw a bakkie with youngsters and shovels removing the worst of the sand last year. Might have been around the time of the Time Trials?

I'm riding there on Saturday - will take extra tubes!

Remember a few years ago when they used to drop tacks in the cradle to puncture tyres?

Remember the thread before that of the cyclist pissing in someones driveway and getting caught on camera.Highly entertaining

It's the perfect opportunity for a large corporate to take ownership of the cradle. Employ a team of sweepers wearing branded hi-viz. Everyone loves a hi-viz jacket.

There used to be a company called MoveSafe but they received no support from the local cycling community and closed down.

That is a pity. But what I'm suggesting is a big brand (Momentum/Nedbank/FNB/PWC etc etc) putting a team on the ground on weekends (employing the local community) and needing nothing in return for it to keep it going and growing. Like the Outsurance pointsmen.

They've all got substantial marketing budgets, and this wouldn't require massive input.

I got a very long e-mail from Hein Pienaar of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site.  He highlighted some of the problems they face when dealing with the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport who own and maintain the road reserve in the Cradle.

However, he is very active with local stakeholders and has asked us to highlight the 'hot spots' where we find the most glass and debris.

I'll create another thread for that.
