MTB Pedals on a Road Bike

Hi Hubbers

I'm one of the many that have been hanging around for a while but never had the guts to say anything.

Ok, some background, I'm a proper weekend warrior (and even then only when the weather's good) and my father in law has given me an old road bike of his as an upgrade to my current bike. The pedals are different and I think its that my current bike has road pedals (the triangular shape) and the new bike has much more square-ish pedals and obviously the two are not compatible...

So what's the deal, does the new bike have MTB pedals? What are my options here? New shoes? Which are the best pedals to go with? I'm leaning towards the MTB pedals (please advise if there's another name for these things) because I think they may be the same ones as the spinning bikes at the gym?

Please help... and forgive my noobness.

Thanks

Bubbles

Take the pedals from your old bike and put them on the new one. Mtb cleats can mean new shoes, it's not worth the extra expense, upgraditus aside.

Hey Bubbles,

yes - te ones at gym are generally shimano spd-tyupe pedals, which are your most well known MTB clipless pedals.

With regard to the square type pedals, if they're these, then they are indeed "mountain bike" SPD's and will probably not be compatible with your "road bike pedals" unless they are of the type shown in the 2nd picture. All else aside though, welcome to the Hub and if you can post pics of both sets of pedals, that would help us immensely.

Thanks guys

CPT - they're very similar to the first picture. I get that I can swap the pedals, but in the long run, am I not better off just getting MTB shoes?

Are there any benefits to using the SPD type pedals?

I used to have MTB pedals on my road bike and MTB, when I still used cleats. Mainly cos I didn't want to have 2 sets of shoes...

If you're looking at getting new shoes anyway, the MTB shoes offer more grip on the dirt than their road bike cousins, which is critical if you're off the bike walking a section. If you decide to do that, you'd be better off keeping the roadie shoes for the road and the MTB shoes for the MTB and spinning - getting new pedals for the 2nd bke would just add additional unnecessary cost.

Upload a picture of the pedals and I can tell you what type they are.

What shoes are you riding with when you do your weekend adventures?

if it helps my wife rides with mountain bike pedals on both her road and mountain bike, she likes it as its much easier to clip in an out and it saved her from buying an additional pair of shoes...

Currently using Adidas road shoes (fairly old) so could do with replacing. Thinking I may as well go the MTB shoe route and keep these pedals on, that way, if I get a MTB down the road (which I plan on doing), then I can double up with the same pair of shoes.

I use SPD pedals on both road and MTB. I have been thinking about getting road shoes and pedals, but honestly the MTB shoes I use are super stiff and Im not so sure I want to be walking around in road shoes in the coffee shops. I would have liked the lightness of a road pedal though :/

So get stiff MTB shoes like Mavic Pulse (Great value for money) if you want to swap out.

The way I see it is you can use mtb shoes to ride on the road, but no chance you are pushing up a hill in road shoes. So unless you can afford it by the Mtb shoes. I have never used Road shies, although I have been told proper Road shoes and pedals are much more efficient. I repeat, 'have been told'...

Going to pick up a pair of MTB shoes then and get cracking. Hope to see you out there, I'm usually the out of breath guy labouring up the hill that you all whizz past.

Cheers
