Apparently it was actually the mast - from PPA website:

" I was attacked at 10.00 on Thursday while coming down from the mast on my own, near to the path down to Hout Bay. Four men with knives and pangas. They stole whatever they could, tied me up and slashed my tyres. I was not injured.
The muggers probably came up from the township in Hout Bay were probably also after hikers. I reported it in full to TMNP staff (and SAPS) who were very helpful and send trackers up to the area and round to the Hout bay side of the foot path.

This is no longer a safe place to ride alone. Please will you publicise this via TMB, preferably not with my name."

For those of you who know the road to the Mast, there is a section where the road flattens out , not far after the open gate on the way up. This is where the attack took place. There is a footpath coming up from Hout Bay, most probably used by the criminals. It is not the first attack that has happened here. I remember an attack last year where someone was also tied up. By the sounds of the modus operandi, it could be the same individuals.

Guys. All I can say is ,please try to ride in a group!!!!! I know it's hard to always ride with mates when you want to ride and everyone is working. If you ride alone and you are approaching a hotspot area, see if there are other riders heading in the same direction and team up.
Always tell someone where you are going and how long your ride will be.
If you enter Tokai at the Arboretum, why not make a note on the sign in sheet and tell the rangers where you are heading. If you're riding to the Mast, definitely tell them.
If you see dodgy people while out on your bike, STOP! Observe and be prepared to turn around.
When confronted, don't inflame the situation by getting cocky! Get off your bike and try to keep it between your assailant/s and yourself.
If you have to , throw the bike at them and run!
I don't have all the answers, but these sort of make some sense.

We don't have a 100% safe environment to cycle in. That's just how it is. Be vigilant, communicate and ride together.
