Stronger, lighter wheels

Hi Hub People,

I'm looking for advice on buying strong, light 29er XC wheels - based on user recommendations. Appoliges if there is already a thread that covers that, please redirect me if that is the case.

 

What I have at the moment are Syncros Alex Rims XC 49 that came stock on my Scott Scale 940. I want to replace them for 2 reasons:

1. I'm not especially heavy (76kg) and am not a psycho downhiller either, but despite that I break spokes very often. A few friends have said this is common with alex rims. I wouldn't know any better.

2. I looking for the opportunity to take a bit of weight off my bike and wheels are often a good place to start.

 

So if anyone has 29er XC wheels that they would recommend, then please let me know. Economy is a factor for me,  I'm not preapred to spalsh out on the best carbon rims ever made. Just something that is lighter and stronger than my current set, without breaking the bank.

You can't get lighter, stronger wheels.  Something (strength or durability) has to be compromised to save weight.  I'll bet that with your current wheels it is not the rims that are the problem, it is the number of spokes, the spoke quality or both.  I would recommend real light wheels for race days only - and don't expect them to last forever.  Build a good durable set for everyday use and don't even bother to weigh them.

What ever you do get a good wheel builder to build up your new wheels or if you go for new out the box get them checked out.

 

Also have a look at the American Classic 101 rims they lighter and stronger that Crests

I hear what you're saying, but it's not a straight trade-off between material and weight in my opinion. Better design and material selection can make something stronger with less. The trade-off is cost. As the saying goes, "You can have strong, light and cheap....but you can't have all 3".

 

The idea of separate race wheels is a good one though, thanks. I'll look into the spokes too.

This is, with respect, just nonsense.

 

Lighter and stronger is easily achieved.

 

You speak of spoke count and spoke quality but neglect the crucial matter of building the wheels properly.

 

A good builder can build a durable, lightweight, low spoke count wheel suitable for training as well as racing.

Hi Chaps - so I think I'm going to go with ZTR crests. I've spoken to a wheel builder who will do ZTR crests on Novatec hubs for R5k-ish, and or ztr crests on Hope Pro hubs for R7K-ish. People seem to write glowing reviews for Hope Pro hubs, whereas with Novatec is a bit more "Yeah they're OK". 

 

Is it worth the extra money to go hope?

I have often played with the thought of upgrading my current wheels (the standard Anthem X wheels - Giant P-XCR) for a while now and to be honest I imagined it would be as easy as walking into my LBS and asking for an upgrade. I assume there is benefit in going to a wheel-builder with regards to cost and customisation.

 

So my question is as follows: are there any recommended wheel builders in Johannesburg?

The Crests tick the 'Lighter' box but you'll have a cross in the 'Stronger' (stiffer) box.

 

Rather look at the Arch EX. Weight penalty is just a few grams, but the performance gain from the stiffer wheelset far, far outweighs the tiny weight penalty.

It definitely is. Only thing i ever have to replace in my hopes are the freehub baring which costs about R100. I think Chris willemse cycles sell crest with hopes for some super cheap price. 5.8k or something. Have a look
