Cape Cycle Tour on Bmx

So yesterday I tidied up the bike...

the rear brake cable was replaced (That V section).  I also added some nice finishing touches, like heat shrink, so it will stay tidy.

I have also replaced the brake lever. The one I had was bent from previous crashes, and they were dirt cheap...

Please excuse the shockingly bad pics. I will post nice pics of the finished bike, I promise.

Seeing that I haven't found a new set of tyres yet, the old ones went back on. At least they are clean, and they have a new set of tubes.

On the rear rim I thought the brakes would grip a little bit better. But the still suck. Those brake pads look like the original parts that came with the bike. So I'll get some new ones and hope for the best.

Once again, the photo doesn't show the whole picture, but the old seat (left) was broken, and glued back together. the whole thing was skew on the seat post. Hopefully the new will be a little bit friendlier.

The last pic for now. That chrome crank, wheels & pedals is really reminiscent of the 90's..

The frame is pretty much assembled in this pic, except for the wheels and "hipster" chain.

As I mentioned at the start, I wanted to keep the frame original with all the scratches it has. I also decided to keep the handlebars as is. This was not really a full restoration project, but rather a big service..

So the bike is pretty much ready. The last two things I want to do is to replace the four headset bolts which are a bit rusty & brake pads.

Took it for a ride last night, about 17kms and it feels good. The gearing is jut manageable on steep up hills, but I do spin out fairly quickly on the down hills. The box for transporting the bike is not done yet. I'll spend a little time on that as well

Hi

Mate of mine did 10 consecutive Argus' on a BMX (and 3 on a unicycle..).

PM Me and I'll give you his contacts, I'm sure he can give loads of advice.

I rode the route with him once on a BMX - scariest for me was long downhills at anything more than 50 km/h. Very, very twitchy, had one huge tankslapper that went on for hours.

And - Good Luck!

Thanks Blackheart. Going those speeds with the crappy bmx brakes is no joke. I'll still contact your buddy. It's just been a busy week...

Fitted one of these that was laying around. These wireless jobbies aren't  great. They chow batteries.

By chance I got this set of tyres at the bike shop...

The local shop was busy cleaning out stock for stock-take or something. found one on the rack, and one underneath a pile of spares.

So the bike is packed and ready to go. I supported the cardboard box with some wood bracing, and to hold the bike down inside, and bubble wrapped the hell out of it. This box ways a ton right now.

Now we just have to see about the route... If it is an alternative route I won't be taking it too serious. I was really hoping for the Chapman's route...

Well... Interesting developments on the route. I'm still packed and ready to go, and will see you all in CT tomorrow morning. Luckily I wasn't one of the "serious okes" to start off with, that I see on the forum.

Although I'm disappointed that I'm not able to cycle Chapmans, I'm not really losing anything by the changes to the route... I still get the chance to catch up with some friends I haven't seen in a while, and hopefully have a beer with some hubbers after the ride!

:offtopic: Just love the darling breweries beer. Only problem is they are hell of expensive in Pta. between R29 - R48 per bottle.

Mate, if I could find a beemer (bmx) now I'd join you on this journey! this year is going to be amazing and I can't wait to enjoy every thing about the day and show support for this great city.

I'm going to take 2 slow beers, wrap them in ice and if I see you we'll crack them together and have a yarn!

That sounds like the best plan I heard all day (having a beer en route)...

There is still some time left to get a cheapie bmx. It will be awesome to ride together!
