Even a 5 post minimum before posting would work. 50 post requirement would kill the classifieds, most people don't have 50 posts, took me a while.

the 50 post counts would minimize some of the public that uses the "Classified" section exclusively for their own motive.

If the user really "cycles", he/she would have an opinion (ranting included), questions of some sorts & would had utilize the forum.

But surely if you don't have, lets make it 30 posts but you have a good seller rating, or if one of your mates or someone you have done business with on the hub can "endorse you" it would work? Most of us know someone who will endorse them? This is just me brain storming. Im so admin can come up with a proper plan.

O and i actually called the guy and he picked up. Pretended to be interested and asked him a few questions to see if i can fish out where he works from. He said "Riversdale" and the usual story followed. Asked him if we could meet and he said he is leaving for maputo soon. He sounded Malawian. Not the deep Nigerian cliché voice. I then continued to teach him a few Afrikaans words that i cant write here.

Hubsa found.?? You talking about scum who do this for a living, if you stole people's money via scams surely these types of sites would be your hunting grounds

DIFFERENCE IS HERE WE HAVE A REPORT BUTTON AND "wide awake " HUBBERS your chances are 99% better than scamtree, IMHO

having said that when I buy on the hub if I don't know the HUBBER I ask can any one vouch for the HUBBER or does anyone know the HUBBER ,,,,I don't have a 1000post requirement but I will make sure it's at least a HUBBER someone knows

When in doubt hit REPORT,

Thats true Dips. BUT it would really taint the hub if every second ad was a scam. I go overseas alot and when i go on pinkbike and advertise or buy something its annoying when every second email is a Scammer that just wastes everyone's time. I have recently been looking for a maine coon kitten to buy but out of the 20 ads and even websites i could find there was 1 that was geniune. It's a frustrating and angering thing.

And you have to remember. These guys are still successful at what they do otherwise there wouldn't be so many of them. There are still people out there who don't know about these scams and they loose money everyday. I'd rather see us prevent it than live with it after the fact

This is a really difficult situation as I do not necessarily always have the time or the inclination to comment on forum posts but I have made use of the classified section a few times to both purchase and sell items. So because I do not have a 50 post minimum I am not to be trusted?

Ya but if you have used the classifieds and someone knows you they will be able to vouch for you. And surely you would know someone on the hub as a friend who could endorse you. Not that difficult really

What alternative would you propose then?

Its not nice to exclude people but at some point a line has to be drawn and people need as much protection from these scammers as possible.

It is personal unfortunately, in today's times I think trusting people you don't know is not an option sadly. Seems like the hub works well (few scams occur) that I know of, anyway back in the good old days a handshake would do, IF YOU KNEW THE PERSON or you knew someone who knew the person then trust worked, that's how I see it ,,,,that's what why communities work, on the net or in real life here people vouch for each other, I would trust this way of trade a million times over a "BARGAIN"

First thing I do when I see goods I want I make the initial call trust my gut,THEN ASK A FEW HUBBERS IF THEY KNOW THE GUY

Unfortunately the system doesn't work for everyone, but there are thousands of happy customers who have done safe transactions here on the hub

Nice idea - the endorsements could work well. Perhaps even extending this to leverage other social networks, e.g. an opt-in view of friends / connections in common on networks like Facebook and LinkedIn.

As a starting point to address these concerns we will be restricting first time classifieds posters by requiring approval on the first ad before it will appear live on the site. From there on they'll be able to post as normal. In this example the ad would have raised flags immediately and quite likely never have been published.

It has been discussed in the past and features to allow this are already scheduled for our next development round for Q1 this year, however we'll prioritise this specific functionality to get it implemented this month.

While we work on implementing this asap please continue to report any suspicious ads you come across.

Most other forums require a 20-50 post count before you may trade in the classifieds. On 2 i have been asked to send proof of who i am and address.

I have to agree with Allison, there's a lot of silent hub members on here that have probably been around since the Hub came on line (I'm one of them)....that fact that they don't post, should that penalise them from taking part in the classifieds.

To be honest put a 50 post count even a 100 post count, i'll achieve that in an hour if I want to, doesn't make me more trustworthy. I like the fact that we look out for each other and if there's a suspect post it seems to be pointed out immediately....it works.

You can't tell me that there haven't been any suspect deals between hub members with posts greater than 50.....I'm constantly seeing posts about someone who's been taken for a ride from an established Hub member.

I do believe it's the responsibility of the buyer to check from whom he's buying and do his homework....there's a lot of "suspect" posts on the Hub - people asking way too much for their goods, so surely this is a form of "dishonesty" - do your homework, check the pricing, phone and meet, if you feel something is up, walk away.

If you want to be more proactive come up with a solution that does not isolate a large amount members silent or not....suggestion....there's a lot of people who are trusted on the Hub (moderators etc), create review type service through these people in the main geographical areas....so paying DIPSLICK above 2% of sales to verify the goods (if necessary, which is up to the buyer!), or extend it to LBS's to become authorized Hub re sellers, goods get dropped off and hence verified....everyone wins. Damn, the more I think about the more I want to become a "authorised hub verifier/reseller"!

I have personally passed on many a bargain after going through the sellers profile and realizing that they are not active members. Better safe than sorry. I have also taken calculated risks and bought from 0 post sellers, turned out well for me luckily and then rated the seller.

Problem is that you get a lot of "tyre kickers" so how long before these "verifiers" decline this help from people stuffing them around. I have received many mails in reply to ads where the person is simply fishing!!

Yes you can get 50 or 100 posts pretty quickly but a buyer will also be able to see just as quickly if they are meaningful posts or not.

**At the end of the day by not being an active, participating member (through contributing by posting) you are in fact excuding yourself from this community.

The community is not complete, it is an open door, participation is the way you join. Lurking achieves very little aside from what you may learn from the knowledge which is regularly dispensed.

Imagine if nobody shared their knowledge, experiences, etc, where would "your" community be then???

Funny how the Lurkers seem to have so much to say, now, yet find it so hard to contribute elsewhere????
