A Yank in South Africa

Seems like a good bike. A bit too far without a car, but I will try.

For fun, I walked into a Cash Crusader and actually saw a couple of road bikes. Could these bikes be possibly stolen? One still had a computer and lights. I would take a chance, but can anyone recommend a LBS for a quick checkup?

Also, where could I go for clothes, shoes and other accessories?

Is anyone doing the tour in a costume? I would love to join such a group.

Bummer,  it's a nice bike...

Cash crusaders aren't supposed to sell stolen bikes.  They're like a pawn shop.  The items are generally checked for receipts or proof of ownership before buying them.

As for kit - if you want something cheap, then Mr Price Sport has a fairly good selection otherwise other sports stores.  If you can wait until the Argus Expo, there's branded kit for sale, ie Cape Town Cycle Tour branded kit.  And then there's a few factory shops also at the expo.

If you don't come right, just PM me, I have a few hours available early Saturday morning and can take you to the bike shop and the anatomic clothing store.

I am fairly certain I want to get one of the bikes at Cash Crusaders, but I want to bring it straight to a LBS for a tuneup. Hopefully the same one has accessories.

If you are based in the city centre, there are a few good options:

http://www.actioncycling.com/(smack in the middle of the city)

http://www.revolutioncycles.co.za/(in Bree street, walking/riding distance from city centre)

Also, CWC Green point in Somerset Road, Green Point.

They will all be booked up for servicing bikes this close to the Argus, but just put on your "poor lost traveller" face and someone will help out, I'm sure.

Actually, I might be wrong about the actual location. Does anybody know where Upshift Cycles is?

I am not trusting the cash crusaders bike.

Google says they are in Table View which isn't too far but you would need a lift to get there.

Give them a call and see if they could bring the bike to you, it's worth a shot.

Sadly, I am going to have to bail on the cycle tour. I am heartbroken. Every private seller I was in contact with sold their bike before I arrived in Cape Town. The bike at Cash Crusaders is gone and the dealer in Table View does not respond to emails or phone calls. So sad.

Thank for all the replies. Everyone is so helpful.

Renting does not fit into my plans. Part of my problem is that I do not have a car, so I cannot tap onto the used market of the suburbs. I finally have someone willing to meet me. Any opinion on this bike?

That's not far from my place - pm me and see if we can make a plan to get you there.

There are a couple of bike shops worth looking at around there too.
