Need some help with a bike build

On the issue of finances. I also didn't have the outright funds and the financing thing didn't sit right with me either. I did spend more in the end that I probably would have buying off the shelf. I spent a year buying a part each month and then ultimately put it all together. The bike I built is awesome but for the money I could have probably done better. Still I wouldn't have given up the opportunity and knowing how everything works on my bike makes me happy. One thing I did was I bought a frame that is known to be a jack of all trades so when I changed my mind about the direction I was going with the build it wasn't a train smash. As I don't know anything about the type of rider you aspire to be or the type of frame you have in your hands I can't provide much more guidance on technical specs.

I will however say that every time I mentioned I was building a bike at bike shops or to other riders I received a look of confusion and incredulity followed generally by them asking why. I now have an answer but when I started it was only a feeling. Don't let people take the joy from the experience. If you don't already have a basic entry level mtb you may want to buy one anyway and flog it later; yes it won't be as good as what you're building but you'll still be riding. I was fortunate that while I was waiting for my parts I still had a bike. Don't spend a year on the road waiting to hit the dirt. Get out there now. My bike earned the name "the shopping trolley" by the end of its life but I had a lot of fun with it along the way.

Ben, thanks so much for this response.

I've actually bought a Rockshox Reba RL 26 Solo Air fork already. Forgot to mention that.

I've done a lot of research on the 1X10 setup and personally, I don't think I'm tough enough for that just yet. I'm an avid road cyclist but have never done mountain biking before, hence really confused by all of this. In hindsight, I should probably have bought a pre-built bike, but then you always end up replacing this part and that part. I figured if I built it from scratch, I can basically fit what I want to it.

Also wasn't tough enough yet, so opted for a 32T front with 11-36 rear on my 1 x 10 setup. Can always put a bigger chainring on if you harden up more. you will be surprised as to how quickly you will harden up, and how much you will love the simplicity of 1 x 10.

So I recently purchased me a 26" Mtb frame to build me a bike up from scratch. Unfortunately, now that I'm trying to get some components, I'm getting all confused due to the volume of differents parts available and what actually will fit. I'm starting to think I might have done the wrong thing.

Anyways, if anyone can assist me, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking at fitting sram components and I'm stuck on the following:

Front Derailleur:

It's asking me for high clamp, low clamp, low direct etc? What does any of this mean? Do I need a specific one for my bike or can I choose any of them?

Rear Derailleur:

It's asking me for either, medium cage, short cage, long cage. Again, I'm completely clueless.

Brakes:

It's asking me for either 800mm/1400mm/750mm hose etc. Also rotor size. Again, no idea what to pick.

Crankset:

The set I want says you need the frame to be BB30 compatible. How do I know if it is?

Wheels:

It's asking me either a 6bolt or centrelock option. Again, what is better here?

It's also asking me for either 15mm front & 135mm X QR Rear or 155m front & 135/142?

Again, completely clueless here.

Thanks guys

1st off all let me say that your on the right track .... 26"er !!!

Guys, just to refresh this thread again.

Regarding the Bottom Bracket, and excuse me if I sound like a complete tool, but can you fit an Sram pressfit GXP bottom bracket into a BB shell which has threading?

Secondly, if this wont work, can I still buy the complete crankset with BB, but then just replace the BB and keep the crank or would I need to buy a new crank?

Thanks

Does your BB shell definitely have threads? You get an external cup type GXP bottom bracket but I saw you liked a BB30 crankset... either way you're after something like these

BB30 option http://www.evobikes.co.za/components/bottom-brackets/race-face-chinch-bottom-bracket-cups-bb30-bsa-68-73.html

GXP option http://www.evobikes.co.za/components/bottom-brackets/sram-truvativ-gxp-bottom-bracket.html

Shimano option http://www.evobikes.co.za/components/bottom-brackets/shimano-hollowtech-bb.html

If you take a pic of the BB shell and post a link to the crank we can assist more. Also post a pic of the fork dropouts and steerer, frame head tube, frame rear dropouts from the brake side, and the wheels also from the brake side. From there we should have all the info to get you on the trail :)

you can ignore what I said earlier about the bb30 crank. The crank I found is an sram x9 gxp pressfit. I'm certain the standard sram gxp fits but will the gxp pressfit fit as well?

Here are some pics:
