The clever folks in charge thought it better to have Berge & Dale on Saturday and Serengeti on Sunday on the same weekend rather than a week apart.

SA Champs is a national event. Not sure what the exclusivity rule is, but the next race category down from nationals (excluding provincials) is Cat-R1.

That means no other sanctioned events are allowed within a 500km radius. Nelspruit is less than 400km from Joburg/PTA, so there's the reason for Gauteng race free weekend.

Thx for explaining. I still think it is silly. 99% of riders have no business at the champs.

Who do you please?

The SPONSOR(S) who help make the event it is - and then the top guys are not there. Less media exposure, and whatever else that means. OR...

The MASS PARTICIPANT - who brings most of the income that covers the expenses.

I think that's where the sanctioning of the CTCT was in debate - the organisers were willing to pay sanction fees for the licensed section, and CSA didn't want to part-sanction an event.

Perhaps a fun-ride that is timed, but with the prize money. A basic event, but then again as soon as a number is placed on bike/back then it turns into a race.

Forgo my ride this morning hoping to catch some action, if only highlights from the SA Champs but to no avail! Poor show. I guess the sponsors don't feature against the likes of CL & Co.

Problem is that the sponsors aren't getting exposure and we aren't getting a race. I think this was not properly thought out.
