Th deadest bearings on my Rumblefish need replacing and phoning around this morning gave me a bit of a fright with the costs. R250 for bottom bearing and R200 for the top. The current bearings are cage type and I would like to get sealed bearings. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the specifications for a Trek Rumblefish please.

Me thinks it will be better to replace the whole headset - not just the bearings.  Probably cost the same as the two bearings alone (or less!).  Unless you can find the FSA part number you will need to press the the cups out of the frame to measure the head tube and then get the right sized headset.

I faced the same problem two months ago on my SuperFly.  I ended up just making a seal to fit the cage type headset on the lower, and using a regular o-ring to seal the upper.  Seems to have worked very well, and didn't cost more than R20.

Thanks for the help. After numerous searches and some dodgy pages Cane Creek has a very useful tool to give some accurate details on most of the measurements needed. With all this detail I am hoping that having family in the bearing business pays off.

Headset bearings are headset bearings, and you won't find them at Bearing Man. You also won't fit cartridge bearings into the existing cups, you'll need a new headset. The good news, though, is that once you've fitted it you can just replace bearings, and if you buy a properly sealed one like Cane Creek and service it regularly that won't be often.

The SHIS page on the Cane Creek site is the right tool to find what you need.

Depends on mileage and riding conditions. Wet and muddy = more often. Just loosen your headset every now and then and check the condition - if there's crap in there, pull it apart, clean, regrease and continue. Same goes for your BB.
